The Assistant Dean of Student Affairs for Civility Initiatives has primary responsibility for designing and leading a comprehensive slate of initiatives geared toward proactive community building and engagement with an emphasis on civility. These efforts are intended to increase opportunities for respectful discourse, enhance students' capacity to resolve conflicts and assist in cultivating a deep sense of self-awareness, intercultural understanding and belonging through dialogue and restorative practices. The successful candidate will facilitate planning, guide implementation and monitor progress on strategic priorities informed through assessment and student voices.
This role serves as a critical collaborator and point of connection for partners across the university including academic Colleges, the Student Academic Success Center, and students and partners at our non-Pittsburgh campuses and locations. As student affairs liaison to a designated College, the assistant dean will assist with University efforts in support of student learning, persistence, and overall student success.
Your core responsibilities will include:
Design and lead the implementation of a comprehensive approach to community building through civil discourse and community dialogue. These initiatives will be culturally responsive and relevant; include proactive engagement and skill building opportunities; and support university responses to timely issues and concerns. This work will require broad based partnership and collaboration with team members within student affairs and across the university and center student voices in both design and implementation.
Restorative practices program design and development. Serve as a key participant in the steering committee working to build capacity across the university for restorative approaches. This will include strategic planning, assessment activities and direct program delivery as well as partnering with relevant industry experts. Coordinate divisional efforts aimed at increasing understanding, repairing harm, and reducing or resolving conflict.
Serve as a student affairs liaison to designated college. College liaisons work in partnership with students, advisors, faculty, and associate deans in an assigned college and assure support for students regarding their overall Carnegie Mellon experience. The college liaison works in partnership with residential housefellows and serves as the primary Student Affairs advocate for an assigned population of undergraduate students living off campus and/or graduate students.
Participate in regular professional development opportunities including university service on committees, working groups, etc.

They will have a record of progressive, student-centered leadership with examples of innovative approaches and initiatives that they have successfully developed. Key qualifications and characteristics include:
Proven success in program creation and management;
Successful track record of innovation in a multi-stakeholder environment;
Advanced interpersonal and intercultural communication skills;
Experiencing with conflict resolution, mediation and/or de-escalation strategies;
Evidenced assessment and evaluation abilities and strong organizational skills;
Ability to optimally facilitate discussions and presentations in both large and small settings; and
Nuanced understanding of complex, contemporary issues in higher education.
Qualifications:
Master's degree in related field required; Advanced research experience or terminal degree preferred
5+ years of progressive leadership experience in field of higher education. Specific experience in program creation and development; 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in field of higher education including departmental oversight or significant managerial role preferred. Direct experience creating initiatives intended to address community needs and evaluating their success
A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
