Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math Science and Talent Search programs serve over 900 students during the academic year and the summer. TRIO Outreach works with 13 high schools across San Diego County. Our goal is to increase the number of low income, first generation students enrolling in college. TRIO provides free college-ready services, such as: tutoring, college advising, workshops, field trips, college and career exploration, college application, and financial aid application support.
Under close supervision of higher-level K-14 Academic Preparation Specialists, uses K-14 academic preparation professional concepts and practices by working with assigned sites to implement academic preparation programs. Tutors are responsible for providing on-site, after school assistance in high school level coursework for grade levels 9th-12th. Tutors must provide their own transportation to and from the school site.
Tutors independently manage the tutoring space at the school site and are responsible for fostering an academic learning environment. Tutors provide academic support in the following subjects: Math, English, History, Science, Electives and Visual & Performing Arts. All tutors must be willing and able to help students in advanced high school math and science coursework, as this is a high need area.
Tutors will work with low-income, ethnically diverse students in a group setting. Tutors will be responsible for the monitoring of academic progress and afterschool tutoring attendance of participants. During afterschool tutoring, tutors will; lead individual or small group tutorials, maintain a productive learning environment, organize & facilitate weekly study sessions, study skill development workshops, assist with SAT/ACT reviews sessions, review current events, conduct STEM-related activities, and other duties as assigned by the program coordinator. Tutors may be asked to work collaboratively with other outreach programs, teachers at the school sites, and other local area service providers.
Tutors will be asked to serve as chaperons and role models and therefore will be expected to act with the utmost respect, diplomacy, and tact when working in the community. Tutors are responsible for frequent communication with their supervisors, especially as it pertains to their role in monitoring the tutoring area. Tutors will be assigned additional hours to chaperone Saturday activities, which included riding the bus with students to a TRIO event location, engaging students in the activity, and ensuring students are respectful on the trip. All tutors fill out daily paperwork with notes on which students were assisted and which subjects were discussed. Paperwork must comply with federal program guidelines.
Job Location: Sweetwater, Chula Vista, Southwest, Mar Vista, Monte Vista, Mount Miguel, San Diego, Lincoln, and Hoover.
Must be available to work at the school sites in the afternoon (3 pm - 5:30 pm), 2 days per week.
Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
Mandatory Training Dates: October 6 & 7 at UCSD.
Proven ability to understand and implement various instructional methods and strategies for increasing students academic skills. Ability to assist students with problem solving, finding solutions and approaching their academic work.
Experience with classroom tutoring, group tutoring or individual tutoring with high school level courses. Experience with keeping students on task and supervising minors in an academic setting.
Basic knowledge working with a diverse student population, and sensitivity to culture, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation and socio-economic status.
Ability to lead and supervise a group of people and facilitate group discussions. Ability to communicate effectively in one-one and group settings.
Basic knowledge of academic programs, including curricula and admissions requirements at higher education institutions.
Basic knowledge and understanding of K-14 education, high school graduation and college entrance requirements.
Basic knowledge of higher education institutions (UC, CSU, CC, etc.), and the ability to explain procedures to youth, parents, and school representatives.
Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with school district administrators, school counselors, principals, teachers, and community
