DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) program is an interdisciplinary graduate program involving faculty from the Physical and Biological Sciences (PBSci) Division and the Baskin School of Engineering (BSOE). The main goal of the program is to accelerate the acquisition of fundamental knowledge required to discover and develop new materials used in sustainable technologies. Specifically, the program will focus on the new materials with novel electronic, magnetic, and photonic properties that enable the realization of sustainable technologies. Sustainable technologies are those that make efficient use of energy and water resources, a theme that is of much importance to UC Santa Cruz and the State of California. Cohorts of scientists are trained through a two-year MS degree focusing on coursework and a PhD program focusing on research in experimental and theoretical aspects of materials. The MSE program is also uniquely positioned to enhance workforce development in the high-tech area due to the proximity of the UCSC campus to Silicon Valley.
