The Associate Director for Civic Engagement is part of the Career Education team working with first year students through graduates. Reporting to the Director for Civic Engagement, this position plays a key role in connecting with students to cultivate a culture of civic engagement at Wellesley College and civic action off campus. The Associate Director will partner closely with both community leaders and campus partners to create and shepherd opportunities for students to engage in sustained and reflective experiential learning that elevates the transformative effect of their educational experience.
Through strong coordination, planning, and collaboration, the person in this role will work to grow civic engagement programs and activities at the College. In addition, the Associate Director will work to actively connect the strategies of Civic Engagement and Career Education, helping students to build their civic toolkit and reflect on ways to confidently explore and lead lives of meaning and purpose no matter the industry or field they choose to pursue.
Primary Position Responsibilities
Student Leadership and Supervision
Recruit, train, and mentor the Ministrare Peer Leaders team (5 students) tasked with leading their peers in civic engagement activities
Collaborate with Career Education colleagues supervising student interns/leaders to ensure cohesive team and interconnected student experience
Assess and track impact of student leaders and programs (student, campus-wide, and community partners)
Train and work with peer leaders to develop learning goals and reflection for students participating in programs
Seek professional development opportunities and feedback on supervision style, leadership approach, and outcomes related to team development and morale
Stay updated on trends, ideas, research, and best practices in the field of civic engagement and social justice education to ensure the vision is aligned with Wellesley strategic goals and national dialogue
Civic Engagement Program Management
Work with the Director of Civic Engagement to execute on the larger vision for civic engagement at Wellesley College involving a complex portfolio of on and off campus programming
Manage all details for programming from marketing/communication, supply ordering, and event design, to day of logistics and execution and post-event assessment
Collaborate closely with key stakeholders across campus to engage students and get them excited about the work
Provide oversight of transportation for students participating in weekly civic engagement projects and the Federal Work Study program to ensure strong stewardship of funds
Oversee the Service Journey alternative break programs during winter and spring break periods
Community Partnerships
Develop and manage relationships with external community partners in support of civic engagement programs and opportunities
Collaborate with the Director for Civic Engagement to coordinate and deliver training tailored to individual partners to ensure students understand the deeper issues and needs within the community and their role in service
Cross-Campus Collaboration and College Initiatives
Support academic and administrative departments interested in collaborating with civic engagement
Serve on various cross-functional teams to promote the vision and direction of both career education and civic engagement
Represent Wellesley in local and national professional associations and conferences
Education
Bachelor’s degree and 5–7 years relevant experience in higher education, civic engagement, or community-based programming required
Experience
Previous experience advising and mentoring students
Previous experience working with diverse student populations and serving as a champion of inclusive excellence
Broad knowledge of community-based learning, civic engagement, and student development
Previous experience working closely with faculty, campus colleagues, and community partners
Experience creating and implementing small and large-scale programs and events

The Associate Director role is a 12-month full-time position
Monday-Friday with occasional weekend and evening commitments
Hybrid (3 days in-office/2 days remote)
