Departmental Overview
Situated within Berkeley's Rausser College of Natural Resources and Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management, Berkeley Wildlife has provided leadership in wildlife and conservation science for a century. Today, we strive to deliver cutting-edge, interdisciplinary, and solutions-oriented research, while training the next generation of scientists and professionals to tackle complex problems in wildlife ecology and conservation. Our faculty and students work on biodiversity broadly, with emphasis on vertebrate species that provide significant ecosystem services to humans, including economic and cultural value, and partner with government and non-profits at the local, state and national level.
Berkeley Wildlife is in an exciting period of growth and renewal, including the addition of several new faculty members the past few years, and strong engagement in the establishment of several new College and Department level initiatives.
The purpose of this position is to lead long-term operational planning as well as day-to-day operations support for Berkeley Wildlife, a growing unit that currently includes 5 core faculty, several affiliate faculty, and the research groups they oversee. In a typical year, the Program supports at least 25 graduate students, 12 postdoctoral scholars, and a few dozen undergraduate trainees, and manages, in partnership with research administration, about $5-7 million in extramural funding. The Berkeley Wildlife community works on sensitive species, vast protected areas, and/or working landscapes, and places a premium on community-engaged research and collaborations with government and NGOs; hence, the position also helps develop and maintain important partnership agreements, communications efforts, and field operations. Given the recent trajectory of Berkeley Wildlife, including the addition of new faculty and a key role in founding and helping administer a new Center for Large Landscape Conservation, the Program Manager is expected to work closely, creatively and adaptively with a faculty director and team, as well as key campus partners, to plan for sustainable growth over the coming 5 years and beyond.
