General Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in business, management, finance, accounting, marketing, counseling or a related field. Two years' experience in financial aid, higher education, financial services, financial literacy education, financial counseling, school or college counseling, or a related field with knowledge of Osteopathic Medical Education preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:
Serves in the College of Osteopathic Medicine as a Financial Aid Counselor to SHSU-COM prospective and current students and assists with designing and executing programming and presentations related to personal finance.
Primary Responsibilities (Staff Positions Only):
Collaborates with COM Enrollment Services leadership and staff, COM faculty and staff, and other colleges, departments and staff across campus to provide a seamless student experience. Assists with developing on-boarding processes and training new staff. Provides individual, comprehensive financial aid counseling and assistance to SHSUCOM students, prospective and current students, and families regarding their financial aid options and the application process. Assists students in finding financial assistance via SHSU and external assistance programs. Assists in counseling students with non-routine, sensitive financial aid issues. Collaborates closely with SHSU Financial Aid & Scholarships main office staff in administering financial aid. Assists students with accurate FAFSA/TASFA application completion, maintains student files throughout their professional student careers and makes changes to financial aid records as necessary. Evaluates and processes financial aid applications, including verifying information and determining student eligibility. Reviews and processes student financial aid, including scholarships, grants, loans and work-study opportunities. Assists with verification, appeals, special circumstances and other aid processes. Counsels students on maintaining aid eligibility and retention advice when not meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) as related to aid eligibility. Manages Professional Judgement (PJ) decisions, SAP appeals, and Cost of Attendance Adjustments under the direction of SHSUCOM Assistant Director of Financial Aid & Scholarships. Requires staying current on changes in financial aid regulations and policies and sharing knowledge with colleagues. Audits student awards and processes revisions as required. Researches, assists, interprets and maintains knowledge of current federal, state, and institutional policies and procedures pertaining to financial aid programs. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and institutional financial aid regulations. Maintains accurate and complete records of financial aid interactions and decisions. Provides individual financial wellness counseling and assistance services to SHSUCOM students. Develops, markets, and presents financial aid and financial wellness information to current, prospective, and pipeline SHSUCOM students and their families at various recruitment and educational events. Assists the department with various events and tasks as directed, including Admissions, Registrar, and other SHSUCOM areas. Performs other related duties as assigned.
