Departmental Overview

The College of Environmental Design (CED) is UC Berkeley's home for environmental design: research, innovation and practice. Upon its founding in 1959, the College was the first school in the country to combine the disciplines of architecture, planning, and landscape architecture into a single academic unit, leading the way toward an integrated approach to analyzing, understanding, and designing our built environment. Today, with over 50 faculty, 1,300 undergraduate and graduate majors and 50 staff, CED focuses on educating creative and skilled environmental leaders to design buildings, cities, regions and landscapes that are ecologically sustainable and resilient, prosperous and fair, as well as healthy and beautiful.

The position of Assistant Dean of Development & Alumni Relations reports to the CED Dean with dotted line reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor, Constituent Programs in University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR). This position manages a complex fundraising program, a professional staff of 3-5 FTE, and is responsible for the full range of development and other external relations functions, such as communications, events, volunteer management, and other marketing activities. CED has raised commitments totaling $75M as part of Berkeley's historic Light the Way Campaign. Boasting 25,000 alumni, CED raises gifts from nearly 1,200 individual, foundation, and corporate donors annually.

Responsibilities

• Manages a comprehensive fundraising program for CED:
  • Conceives, creates, develops, implements, evaluates, and manages fundraising programs and uses data-driven strategies to meet predetermined goals and objective.
  • Oversees and manages the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of donors and prospects, using the CADS database and in collaboration with UDAR.
  • Upholds University policies regarding managing prospects.
  • Oversees the prospect portfolio of each of the fundraising staff.
  • Manages all development related communication, meetings, events, and proposals on behalf of CED.
  • Supervises gift administration and donor stewardship.
• Provides leadership and direction on the development of a college-wide corporate affiliate program, including development of the program's advisory board.
  • In support of the above, designs and oversees CED's collaborations with UDAR related to annual fund, Direct Response Marketing, gift and estate planning, Principal Gifts & Strategic Initiatives, regional major gifts teams, and stewardship.
• Manages a personal portfolio of 50+ principal and major gift donors/prospects, raising a minimum of $5M annually.
• Selects, trains, manages, and evaluates staff and student assistants. Assigns donor and prospect portfolios to fundraising staff. Direct fundraising staff in accomplishing specific numerical goals related to campus fundraising campaigns.
• Provides comprehensive budget administration. Coordinates with Dean and Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration on gifts, funds, financial goals, and reporting.
• Manages external development and alumni relations functions: proper use of the CED/Berkeley brand in development contexts, coordination with central campus alumni relations programs, and coaching the CED Dean and various faculty in external communication, and CED events.
  Collaborates closely with the college's director of communications on development-focused media outreach including the CED newsletters to alumni and friends. Coordinates development and alumni events with the college's events coordinator.
• Represents CED in campus development groups, such as Campaign Management Team, Frontline Fundraisers, and Berkeley Advancement Community. Collaborates with UDAR principal and major gift fundraisers on a regular basis.
• Plans and manages long and short-range strategic planning for advancement functions.

Required Qualifications

• Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to independently write clear and accurate communications for the Dean and (when needed) department chairs, directed to alumni, parents, and donors, as well as staff and campus colleagues. Excellent storytelling abilities to influence positive and sustained change.
• Extensive knowledge and experience in fundraising, donor relations and gift management, including industry concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
• Demonstrated experience leading, coaching, mentoring, and assessing staff.
• Excellent strategic thinking skills: able to balance knowledge of details and motivate others using the big picture and able to plan and implement short and long-term goals.
• Working knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
• High degree of proficiency in data analysis.
• Highly motivated and detail oriented.
• Entrepreneurial and possesses the ability to work under pressure within the context of competing interests, maintain flexibility and creativity, and adapt to continual changes.
• Proficiency with desktop computing applications and fundraising databases, such as Advance or Raiser's Edge, and Salesforce, which are UC Berkeley's systems.

Education/Training:

• Bachelor's degree; grad degree preferred.
• University fundraising training strongly preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

• Working knowledge of the campus, its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
• Strong knowledge of current affairs and issues in higher education.
• Knowledge of the fields within the College of Environmental Design and their scope, particularly in California but also nationally in terms of competitor schools and programs.
• Experience with corporate affiliate programs.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary range / annual pay scale that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $165,000.00 - $216,700.00.

The full salary range for this position classification is $112,100.00 - $216,700.00.
