MAURER SCHOOL OF LAW (BL-LAWS-IUBLA)

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Leads processes, educational efforts, programming, and training to embed the values of diversity and inclusion in the selection, training, support, and advancement of faculty, staff, and students at all levels, collaborating on efforts to ensure that the principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion are embedded in the organizational culture and structure. Examines the Law School and University's existing diversity, equity, and inclusion education and training infrastructure and strategies to increase access, broaden content, and deepen engagement in service of the student experience. Further strengthen a Law School culture of open dialogue, recognition, and affirmation of differing views and experiences, the importance of civil engagement across differences, and deep respect for others.
• Leads initiatives to strengthen a sense of community and belonging among an increasingly diverse student community at the Law School. Directs and leads collaborative efforts to build and strengthen strategic initiatives around diversity, equity, inclusion, and engagement as part of the Law School's strategic plan. Develops and builds on the Law School's existing programs, initiatives, and efforts to advance equity and foster a broadly welcoming, inclusive, and representative learning and working environment. Guides a comprehensive and integrated approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion work, synchronizing and leveraging current efforts and initiatives and introducing new concrete actions to move the Law School forward in this crucial area.
• Serves as first point of contact for students and a primary liaison between students, faculty, staff, and senior leadership on student issues and needs related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including facilitating dialogue and providing responses, guidance, and decisions on critical issues and concerns.
• Recruits, hires, and supervises student Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Fellows and Research Assistant positions.
• Collaborates and partner positively with student-facing offices, including the Office for Student Affairs, the Career Services Office, and the Admissions Office, and with staff charged with academic and bar exam support and non-JD programs, as well as with senior leadership, faculty, student affinity groups, and alumni, to shape strategy and coordinate school-wide efforts to foster a welcoming and inclusive learning environment. Strategically facilitate and engage faculty, students, and staff in concrete initiatives.
• Supports the recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty, staff, and student body in collaboration with Admissions, Human Resources, and other stakeholders at the University and Law School, including occasional travel to represent the Law School and assists the Admissions team in student recruiting, and identifying policies and practices that support the recruitment and retention of diverse senior leadership, faculty, staff, and students, and that reduce implicit bias and hiring and recruitment barriers.
• Coordinates on diversity initiatives with both the Law School and University, including serving on appropriate Law School committees, representing the Law School on the University's DEI efforts, and partnering with the University's Office of Student Affairs, the Office for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs, Disability Services, the Disability Resource Center, and the Office of Institutional Equity, and culture centers including but not limited to the LGBTQ+ Culture Center, IU Asian Culture Center, La Casa/Latino Culture Center, Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center.
• Positively and accurately represents the Law School's ongoing efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion to outside stakeholders.
• Serves as a strategic advisor and counsel to the Dean and as a member of the senior leadership team on issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including contributing a DEI lens to inform institutional decision making. Serves as an expert resource on diversity, equity, and inclusion issues and trends in higher education, legal education and legal practice.
  Benchmarks, analyzes, and reports on progress toward diversity, equity, and inclusion goals. Collects and analyzes data, information, and stakeholder input to inform decision-making and make recommendations.
• Designs and conducts workshops, trainings, presentations, and assists or collaborates with faculty and serve as a resource to faculty to help them integrate cultural competency, diversity, equity, and inclusion principles and topics into the classroom and learning environment, including in doctrinal classes, law clinics, and legal skills courses.
  
• Teaches or assists in teaching student-focused course in which the course goals include cultural competency, and facility with diversity, equity, and inclusion in the legal profession.
• Leads program development, including orientation, curriculum, student and peer leader training, staff and faculty training, and other training and classroom needs related to inclusive classrooms, hiring practices, and development of staff and faculty.

General Responsibilities

• Provides highest level of operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff members to define diversity program methodologies and standards; provides direction and guidance on high priority program operations/projects/initiatives.
• Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives, including managing timelines/deliverables and developing resource plans for multi-project/multi-phase program initiatives.
• Conducts a variety of personnel actions to include, but not limited to hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal.
• Manages high level assignments and allocation of resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that involve staff in other departments/areas/teams; may coordinate large-scale programs with a wide audiences in support of academic initiatives.
• Works within a community of scholars to advocate for inclusive excellence in research, creativity, and scholarship in all fields as fundamental to the mission of the department.
• Makes budgetary recommendations/proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment.
• Researches and stays up-to-date on new industry program standards, subject matter experts, best practices, and strategic marketing; responsible for the implementation of new protocols/procedures to address business needs.
• Committed to drawing from existing scholarship and using evidence-based practices to provide intellectual leadership in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion.\
• Works collaboratively with senior campus administrators to plan and develop the infrastructure for equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging to meet the needs of the community.
• Prepares management reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, steering and advisory committees; acts as advisor to executive committees; serves on various university committees, communities of practice, and task forces related to program development, educational initiatives and institutional priorities.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
