DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Division of Global Engagement (GE) advances the University's teaching, research and service mission by working collaboratively throughout the institution to promote global engagement and advance campus internationalization by facilitating international mobility and engagement for students, faculty and staff. GE serves as the primary unit responsible for improving the international student experience and engagement on campus, promoting student and faculty engagement in international initiatives, and developing strategic partnerships abroad. GE interacts with campus leadership on strategic planning and initiatives to elevate the reputation of UCSC globally. GE units include Global Learning, International Student Services and Programs, International Faculty and Scholar Services and Global initiatives.
Reporting directly to the Assistant Vice Provost of Global Engagement, the Executive Director of Global Mobility is a member of the divisional leadership team and directs, through subordinate managers, multiple units within the division: Global Learning (study abroad), International Student Services and Programs and International Faculty and Scholar Services.
The incumbent oversees the daily operations and administration of outbound and inbound mobility services and programs such as study abroad and international student and scholar services, risk management associated with such programs and develops and implements organizational policies and procedures for such programs. As part of the senior leadership group, the Executive Director of Global Mobility plays a key role in resource planning and the implementation of the campus wide Strategic Plan for Internationalization. The incumbent provides advice, guidance and assistance to the Assistant Vice Provost and represents the division in campus wide and system wide meetings and discussions, and is a key contributor in advancing divisional goals.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $120,000 - $148,000/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience. Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. JOB DUTIES
50% - Management and Leadership
Directs the activities of subordinate managers, having overall oversight and responsibility for inbound and outbound mobility services and programs. Provides guidance to subordinate managers to resolve issues that arise. Determines organizational structures of units and allocation of responsibilities. Maintains an in-depth knowledge of student mobility best practices and operations for both study abroad and international students and visiting scholars. Ensures the overall monitoring and success of assigned functions and ensures collaboration with other campus stakeholders as needed.
25% - Strategic Planning
In collaboration with the AVC, makes short- and long-term decisions that advance the internationalization of the campus via mobility programs that reflect upon the division as a whole and with external stakeholders. Represents the division on campus-wide and on system-wide working groups and committees, maintaining relationships with colleagues across the campus and the system in international education to stay current and informed of UC policies and other UC campus programs and policies in the field of international education.
25% - Administration
Oversees the day-to-day operations of the units involved in outbound and inbound mobility programs and services. Advises and supports the Assistant Vice Provost in implementing the Strategic Plan for Internationalization and through development of new programs and expanding existing programs to create global opportunities for all. This may include working with the Director of Global Learning to expand bilateral exchanges and international internships for example. In collaboration with the Director of Finance, provide budgetary and financial oversight for units related to mobility.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and/ or equivalent experience / training.
Demonstrated successful management and supervisory skills to effectively lead others.
Broad knowledge and successful prior experience working in international education in a higher education setting.
Effective written communication skills.
Effective verbal communication and presentation skills.
Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities. Proven ability to organize team work functions in an efficient and effective manner.
Skills to work collaboratively with other units in an organization.
Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in related area.
Experience working in computer application programs commonly used for international education such as Sunapsis or Terra Dotta.
Leadership experience in international education in a higher education setting.
Prior experience overseeing an international student and scholar unit in a higher education setting
Prior experience as a Primary Designated School Official (PDSO) and/ or Responsible Officer (RO)
Prior experience overseeing a study abroad unit in a higher education setting.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
Must be a U.S. Citizen or Naturalized Permanent Resident.
