Posting Summary: The Office of International Students and Scholars at Teachers College, Columbia University is seeking a Part Time International Student Advisor who will provide immigration advisement and support services to international students.
Job Summary/Basic Function: The Part Time International Student Adviser serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternative Responsible Officer (ARO) to deliver immigration advisement and documentation services to the international student community at Teachers College (TC). The incumbent will advise both continuing and incoming F and J students on compliance with immigration regulations. Additionally, they will review and maintain database for F and J record holders as required by federal regulations. The Part Time International Student Adviser may facilitate workshops pertaining to F and J regulatory sessions. Advising and workshops are offered in a hybrid environment.
This position is temporary and will run from August 2023 to February 2024. There will be no extension for this role.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student Documentation Processing
Serve as Designated School Official for F-1 students and Alternate Responsible Officer for the J-1 exchange visitor program to ensure university compliance with DHS, USCIS, and DoS
Maintain student records in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) following all applicable rules and regulations
Review, process and generate documentation requests from international students
Monitor and maintain international student records in SUNAPSIS while actively enrolled at the school and during post-graduation activities such as optional practical training and academic training
Student Advising & Support
Provide immigration advising and support services for continuing international students in degree and non-degree seeking graduate programs
Advise prospective and admitted international students on pre-arrival immigration-related matters and check-in services
Ensure information related to international students is clearly and promptly disseminated
Assist international students with applications and procedures to remain in status
Serve as liaison between student, faculty, and staff regarding personal and academic concerns as it relates to their immigration status
Programming
Participate in the delivery of orientation and programming activities for international students
Make referrals to and work cooperatively with other campus based resources
Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from accredited institution
Knowledge of F-1 and J-1 student immigration regulations
Demonstrated sensitivity and ability to navigate cross-cultural environments
Experience working with international students or clients
Due to federal database access requirements, applicant must be US citizen or US permanent resident
Preferred Qualifications:
Relevant experience administering and advising F-1 and J-1 immigration regulations as DSO/ARO in a higher education setting
Experience with Banner, SEVIS, and Sunapsis
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
Strong analytical and problem solving skills
Enthusiasm, flexibility and ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
