Job Description Boston University (BU), in partnership with the national search firm, Scott Healy & Associates, invites applications and nominations for the position of Executive Director of the Center for Career Development. The Executive Director will be a forward-thinking, visionary leader who understands and embraces the rapidly changing world of work and how to best structure and organize university career services to set all BU students up for future success. The Executive Director will mobilize and engage a vibrant team of career development professionals that is eager to serve the full diversity of the Boston University student and alumni community.
The new Executive Director of the Center for Career Development will be tasked with reimagining career development services with an eye toward the globally connected world of work. BU's Strategic Plan, which guides the university for the next 10 years, places career development at the forefront; the first pillar of the BU 2030 plan seeks to create a vibrant academic experience for all students:

To that end, the Executive Director strives to increase student engagement with career development and campus recruiting and is responsible for fostering strong partnerships with employers across several sectors to develop opportunities for employment and service learning. Working collaboratively across the University, the Executive Director seeks to strengthen career development services and support student success. Through collaboration with campus stakeholders including Alumni Relations, Graduate Affairs, and other career planning colleagues at the institution, the Executive Director identifies synergies to enhance the quality of service to all constituents. Providing equitable leadership, the Executive Director must create an environment that fosters a positive and inclusive work environment. Special focus is on developing staff to serve students and alumni from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences, including but not limited to international students, LGBTQIA+ students, first generation students, and racially and ethnically diverse students.

The Center for Career Development is the premier career services office for Boston University. It provides robust and relevant services and resources to BU students studying at all levels and modalities, including undergraduate, master's, professional, PhD, in addition to University alumni. The Center offers several services to students and alumni, including career advisement, skills assessment, mentoring and internship opportunities, job-search skill acquisition, on- and off-campus recruiting activities, and outcomes data collection and analysis. Responsibilities of the Executive Director:
Strategic Planning and Vision: The Executive Director will develop and implement a strategic vision and direction for career development services at BU by partnering with academic and administrative leaders, staff, students, faculty, and alumni. The Executive Director will also provide vision and leadership to the satellite career offices embedded in several professional schools and colleges at the University.
Within the Center for Career Development, the Executive Director will continuously review the departmental structure, services, and overall effectiveness of the office; identify emerging trends, opportunities, and challenges particularly as they relate to the world of work; and adjust the department's strategies and priorities accordingly. The Executive Director will also foster a culture of continuous quality improvement, and set organizational goals and objectives with performance metrics to measure progress and success.
Lead a staff of 19 full-time career professionals, including: The Executive Director will provide day-to-day oversight of operations, hiring, staff development, and evaluation, and ensure that the staff is knowledgeable, inclusive and welcoming, and eager to serve. The Executive Director should be well-versed in the unique needs of students and alumni from a diversity of identities and focused on positive outcomes for all. Special focus should be placed on developing staff to serve clients from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences. The Executive Director will provide effective leadership that fosters a positive and inclusive work environment, and develop and implement organizational policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal requirements as well as industry best practices.
Communication and Collaboration: The Executive Director will provide vision for the University in providing comprehensive career development services for all populations, and leadership among critical internal BU stakeholders of career services. This includes the development of a campus-wide communication strategy to promote the vision and services available to all students at the University. The Executive Director will collaborate closely with several key stakeholders across campus: (1) partner with academic units across the University to provide relevant and timely career services to diverse student populations; (2) convene the leaders of the professional school career offices to collaborate in achieving the overall career development goals of the University; (3) collaborate with the Graduate Affairs staff of the Office of the Provost to ensure the services available are accessible to, and meet the needs of, BU graduate and professional students; (4) coordinate with the Alumni Relations office in providing the services and communication with BU alumni, both in meeting alumni future career needs and in developing BU's more than 350,000 alumni as a resource for career advice, internships, and job opportunities for BU students; and (5) collaborate with the physically co-located Educational Resource Center, in promotion of programs and services, and in oversight of the physical spaces shared to ensure a holistic and cooperative approach to providing student services and encouraging student success.
Assessment and Reporting: The Executive Director will guide the ongoing use of assessment tools and data collection techniques; monitor key performance indicators, to gauge effectiveness of departmental efforts and determine effective means of providing service; ensure the compilation and distribution of career outcomes data including, First Destination, and alumni surveys; and research employment trends affecting career opportunities and preparation of students while benchmarking University outcomes against those of peer institutions.
Budget and Planning: The Executive Director will manage departmental income and expense budgets; plan strategically for future fiscal years; steward current grant funding of programs; and identify new opportunities for additional funding and support.
Technological Advancement: The Executive Director will maximize the creative and effective use of technology to enhance the department's ability to provide efficient and world-class service.

Required Qualifications and Skills:
Master's Degree with 12+ years of experience and 8+ years of demonstrated leadership.
Significant expertise in career and professional development at a complex institution; history of increasing responsibility in career services or another relevant field.
A robust understanding of and passion for the transforming global workplace, especially as it relates to the skills gap, generational shifts, and the use of AI and other tools at work.
Experience in building successful partnerships with employers across several sectors.
The Center for Career Developments strategic priorities include infusing principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion within the department and in its service to the BU community. Ideal candidates will have experience championing and leading DEI-focused initiatives.
Competency with current assessment tools, trends, and industry best practices to be able to guide continuous data collection, monitor key performance indicators, and gauge effectiveness of departmental programs and services.
An understanding of and appreciation for the value of international students in a University community and in the global workforce.
Management skills, including strategic planning ability, staff development and supervision, and financial acumen.
Advanced communication skills, emotional and cultural intelligence, and ability to effectively represent the department to the multiple diverse constituencies with which it engages.
