SUNY New Paltz invites applications for the position Academic Advisor. This position serves students as part of Academic Advising in the division of Enrollment Management. The mission of academic advising at SUNY New Paltz is to assist students as they develop meaningful educational plans to help them achieve their academic, career, and life goals.
We seek a full-time, full-year Academic Advisor to provide students with one-on-one and group academic advising and whose practice demonstrates a commitment to supporting an inclusive and welcoming learning environment for a diverse undergraduate population, with an emphasis on supporting racially minoritized groups. This position is a critical contributor to the institution's vision for effective coordination of an integrated set of data-informed academic advising and transition services that support student learning, persistence, and on-time degree completion through personalized educational planning and ongoing support from entry to graduation.
The successful candidate is expected to actively manage a large student caseload (average primary caseload is approximately 200 students, with secondary support of approximately 450 students), which involves a high level of proactive outreach to select first-year students, first-semester transfer students, and students who may be in academic jeopardy. Caseload will consist of 25% Education majors and 75% a combination of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Science & Engineering, and Fine & Performing Arts majors. Academic Advisors are also expected to participate in university programs that support enrollment and retention which may require evenings and weekends.
Essential Duties include:
Provide undergraduate students with integrative advisement and informed guidance with educational planning in a manner that is consistent with NACADA's Core Values of Academic Advising.
Proficiency with advising technology (EAB's Starfish Student Success Platform) to facilitate the delivery of proactive and integrated student advisement in a manner that promotes a seamless and communicative campus-wide culture of student success.
Maintain a current understanding of all college academic policies and procedures which could inform student academic progress and time-to-degree.
Foster collaborative working relationships with faculty, staff and students in support of student success initiatives for all undergraduate students and, in particular, student groups with unique barriers to success including first generation college students, transfer students, diverse learners, and students from underrepresented populations.
Serve as an advising liaison to a specific department or school to enhance the complementary advising relationship between the Office of Academic Advising and the academic departments.
Refer students, as appropriate, to the many resources and offices available to them on campus to support their individual needs and to enhance their educational experience while promoting their development, persistence toward degree, and general well-being.
Support a culture of assessment by contributing to the tracking, collection, reporting and analysis of services for continuous improvement.
Stay apprised of evidence-based practices and other developments in the field of academic advising and student success.

Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's degree AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following:
advising, student recruitment/retention,
youth development,
student development,
program retention,
graduation, and academic planning;
Ability to effectively communicate across diverse groups that include student families as well as University staff, and instructors.
Ability to work with relational databases as well as the Microsoft Office Suite programs.
Demonstrated intercultural competence and an understanding of advancing equity, inclusion and access through advising.
Preferred:
Master's degree, preferably in higher education, education, counseling, or a relevant field. Experience with student support services, youth development or similar social service programs,
Experience with student advising experience at a comparable institution of higher education
Demonstrated success with developing and integrating strategies and programs that support the needs of underrepresented/racially minoritized student populations.
Working understanding and sensitivity to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
Knowledge of student information systems such as Banner, DegreeWorks, and a familiarity with advising technology such as EAB's Starfish.
Fluency in a language other than English.
