The Assistant Director of Student Engagement directly supports student organizations and student leaders and creates opportunities for engagement and events on campus. The position reports to the Director of Student Engagement and aids in the leadership and administration of the Belonging alignment (Student Engagement, Community Engagement and First year Experiences and Transitions),and serves as one of the institution's student advocates.
The Assistant Director of Student Engagement is an energetic visionary member of the student life team, broadly providing leadership and service to the Rhodes community. A commitment to student development and success, experiential learning, and a high level of student interaction is essential.
Job duties include but are not limited to the following:
Coordinate opportunities for student leaders and organizations, such as involvement opportunities, co-programming, and progressive student leader training.
Develop in-depth student leadership programming for emerging student leaders and those outside of specified leadership roles.
Serves as the primary campus contact for Presence, the student organization management website used by the college.
Manage student organization management processes, including and not limited to new student organization process, reregistration process, event approval, finance, and purchasing.
Coordinate communications with student organizations, leaders, and advisors regarding their work. Assists student organizations with event planning, including scheduling based on the academic and event calendar, budgeting, contracting, facilities, safety, food, and other related needs.
Serve as an active and engaged member of the Belonging alignment. Provide direct support and collaboration across the alignment. Support diversity, equity, and inclusion work across the alignment and division.
Supervise, train, and evaluate student leaders and staff associated with Student Engagement and its programs.
Lead and attend student programming, including evening and weekend meetings, student training, and leadership opportunities.
Serve as the Primary advisor for 3 governing boards supported by the office. Those Boards include the Rhodes Activities Board, Rhodes Student Government, Allocations & Student Organization Commission, Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and the Panhellenic Council.
Collaborate with appropriate campus partners on holistic student development programming that supports student populations across campus and student-led initiatives as appropriate.
Assist in developing Campus Traditions, including Homecoming, Family Weekend, Rites of Spring, Senior Week, and other traditions as appropriate.
Develop campus-wide programming that supports belonging initiatives on campus in collaboration with student voices.
Regular attendance is an essential function to perform the duties of this position. Evening hours and frequent weekend work are required.
One (1) year of experience related to Student Engagement
Flexible evening and weekend hours are required
Strong communication, writing, and social media skills are required
Ability to work effectively and efficiently with students, staff, and faculty required
Demonstrated ability to organize numerous projects requiring attention to detail, consistently meet deadlines, exercise professional judgment, and solve problems are required
Prior work with diverse populations, experience facilitating groups, and with advisory responsibilities
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of Compliance & Risk Management
Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and policies
Knowledge and experience with policies and legal issues in higher education
Knowledge of FERPA, Clery, Title IX, and other applicable federal laws
Ability to Provide Leadership, Supervise Staff and Manage Environments
Able to work independently in a highly productive and fast-paced environment.
Ability to provide consultation and coaching for managers, supervisors, staff, faculty, and administrators.
Ability to mediate and use problem-solving skills for resolution.
A thorough understanding of the organizational management of student affairs, including partnership building with students, faculty, staff, parents, and community. Ability to provide perspective and utilize a proactive style of leadership that encourages teamwork and interaction.
Ability to work with a culturally diverse population and promote a campus climate of inclusion and participation by all students.
Ability to analyze complex situations and to make sound judgments and decisions.

Ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships across campus with particular attention to the Dean of Students, Dean of Student Success, Career Services, Residence Life, Campus Safety, Community Engagement, Counseling Center, Alumni & Development, Finance, and Communications.
Ability to interact effectively and respectfully with students, faculty, staff, and families to establish and maintain good working relationships.
