Detailed Job Description
Teach 16-20 contact hours at any proficiency level and in any curricular area of the ELC program. Teaching includes design, planning and preparation of course materials including syllabi, course content, course tests, and grade reports.
Participate in collective curriculum development and review, including analysis of instructional materials, assessment materials, student learning needs, and program learning outcomes.
Participate in instructional coordination meetings, to ensure coherent progression of learning across proficiency levels.
Participate in professional development meetings and assist in planning professional development.
Assist in advising students and in planning cross-cultural projects and activities.
Department/College Description The RIT English Language Center is an accredited language program, offering academically-focused English language courses to prepare international students for success in graduate and undergraduate study. The English Language Center program also provides a socially engaging cross-cultural learning environment to develop students confidence and cultural awareness.
Minimum Qualifications
Masters degree (MA, MS or MS.Ed.) in TESL or Applied Linguistics is required; or equivalent Masters in related field with documented for-credit coursework in six areas: linguistics, culture and society, education theory, second-language pedagogy, second-language assessment, and a language teaching practicum. PhD applicants must also meet the subject-area equivalency requirements.
Minimum of 2 years teaching college-level international students at a variety of levels of English language proficiency and in a variety of courses.
University-level teaching skills, demonstrating understanding of the linguistic requirements of undergraduate and graduate assignments across the university
Knowledge of current theory and practice in linguistic analysis, language pedagogy and language assessment
Ability to communicate effectively, engagingly, accessibly and empathetically in a cross-cultural setting, in particular with students who are developing English language skills
Ability to design and revise work products collaboratively and in a team setting, building and maintaining effective working relationships based on respect, empathy and honesty with diverse groups and individuals
Ability to manage and maintain confidential and private information; uses confidential, sensitive and/or private records and information, protects information appropriately
Computer competence using software and enterprise systems appropriate for the complexities of the role and its functions
