Job Summary:
The Career Advisor is a key position with the Medill Career Services (MCS) team, which provides career advising and employer engagement for our undergraduate and graduate journalism and integrated marketing communications (IMC) students and alumni. This position serves as the primary administrative contact for the office, coordinates efforts for the team, hosts events and completes general administrative tasks. This position advises and counsels students, empowering them to make decisions associated with their career goals and objectives. The Career Advisor assesses individual situations and circumstances and creates, implements and monitors recommendations that meet student needs. This position hosts employer engagement events and completes general administrative tasks for the MCS team.
This position will be primarily based on the Evanston campus, but may also work on-site at our Chicago campus on an occasional basis. When classes are in session, this position will work on-campus 3 days per week, while the remaining 2 days may be remotely. Additional remote work flexibility may be allowed when classes are not in session. Any hybrid working arrangement will be evaluated on a regular basis and may be changed based on business and operational needs.
Please note: The target budgeted salary for this position is $51,000 - $56,000 annually. Offers will be based on candidate experience and education, as well as equity within Northwestern University.
Specific Responsibilities:
Administration
Implements strategic plans and contributes to process by reviewing existing practices and recommending enhancements and improvements.
Participates with area/unit senior staff in the conceptualization, development and presentation of materials used in operations.
Creates and sends regular communications to students.
Reviews and processes student expense reimbursements related to conference travel, and assists with booking student conference travel when needed.
Technology
Reviews processes and recommends changes to incorporate state-of-the-art technology as appropriate into administrative, resource, service, etc. components.
Utilizes Handshake and other career advising platforms to engage with students and employers to share employment opportunities.
Advising/Counseling
Provides first-level student and alumni support for the MCS team.
Provides student centered, personalized counseling and advising that focuses on a student's career development or professional success and in compliance with all associated policies, rules and regulations.
Identifies service improvement opportunities that will enhance counseling and advising.
Career advising & counseling may include: career assessment; search strategies for internships, co-ops and/or jobs; networking; resume & cover letter development; social media footprint; interviewing; job offer negotiation, etc.
Programs/Events
Develops plans and arranges programs - meetings, workshops, seminars, trainings, events, company visits, information sessions, career fairs, etc. designed to provide information, promote resources, and to build internal and external relationships.
Identifies & obtains external expertise as needed and works with content experts for current and new programs.
Reviews programs and recommends changes to increase value, resources and participants.
Manages speaker selection, communication, and topic development.
Leads program/project updates and improvements.
Ensures that program/event details including communication, venues, presenters, travel arrangements, materials, refreshments and technology are arranged and completed in an appropriate and timely manner.
Evaluation
Analyzes program sessions and interacts with participants for purpose of gaining consumer insight, growing and strengthening program knowledge, and optimizing client satisfaction.
Coordinates the collection, analysis & reporting of required information for surveys, review documents, public information documents, etc.
Analyzes evaluation data from internal/external participants (students, faculty, employers, etc.) to assist in program development and updates.
Implements corrective actions required as a result of surveys or other indicators.
Manages student/alumni database containing employment and career progress.
Supervision
Supervises student workers.
Miscellaneous
Collaborates with colleagues across the school to help advance Medill’s goals and improve the educational experience of our students.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience and 1 year career counseling/advising in higher education or 1 year of industry experience; or other relevant experience required; OR
Successful completion of a full course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a master's or JD or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience working in higher education.
Prior experience advising or counseling students.
Experience working in journalism, marketing, communications, and/or human resources.
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Working proficiency in Handshake and Microsoft Office.
