Spalding University is seeking an English Language Learner (ELL) Specialist who will work with students to improve their speaking, reading, writing, and understanding of English to achieve success in classrooms where English is the language of instruction. In addition, this role will work to support the recruitment, retention, and graduation of ELL students. The ELL specialist will have a specific focus on supporting Nursing students for at least 25% of the time, and will spend the balance (75%) of their time focused on serving the entire graduate and undergraduate student body.
A new, grant funded position, the successful candidate will be focused on student success, program development, and community outreach. As this position is funded by a five-year Department of Labor grant, the position is contingent on continued grant funding.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ELL services will be provided through individual student appointments, workshops, in-class presentations, and development of materials, including online content and tools for the Student Success Center website.
Assist Nursing students develop their clinical and technical language skills in English.
Provide labs, workshops, and tailored support to develop comprehension learning strategies, including outreach to rising college students via bridge programs and community partnerships
Engage in the broader Louisville community to assist in the recruitment of ELL students and inform the community of available campus services.
Partner with existing student success centers, including the Reading Lab, Success Coaching, and the Writing Center to support the experiences of ELL students.
Develop assessment plan and assessment cycle for student learning
Serve as part of a dynamic student success team.
SKILLS AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education, English, Higher Education Administration, or similar, Master’s preferred
Experience teaching English Language Learners/English as a Second Language, ESL Certification preferred
Program development skills, including assessment.
Student success software experience preferred.
INTERRELATIONS
Regular or daily contact with faculty, staff, and students.
Demonstrated history working with students of diverse identities and cultures.
This is a full-time position with regular working hours scheduled Monday-Friday. Evening and weekend hours will sometimes be required.
This position is a campus-based position.
