The Assistant Director for Residence Life is responsible for supervision of 4-5 full-time Residence Hall Directors and 4-6 Graduate Assistant Hall Directors, with oversight for a residence hall area of approximately 3000 on-campus students. This position works with the Senior Associate Director to direct the planning, leadership, and management of the overall Residence Education program. The Assistant Director also shares responsibility with another Assistant Director for the planning, management, leadership and implementation of either the staff training and development curriculum or the staff recruitment and selection processes for the Office of Residence Life.
Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities
Staff Supervision and Evaluation:
Directly supervises, trains, disciplines, and evaluates 4-5 Residence Hall Directors.
Manages the human resources functions for the supervisory area, including hiring and personnel actions taken with resident advisors and student desk employees.
Directs the selection and training of the Resident Advisors, Student Desk Managers, Graduate Hall Directors, SMART Mentors, Academic Peer Mentors, and other Residence Life staff positions.
Implements area staff development and training opportunities.
Leads and coordinates Residence Education (25+) and area meetings (9-12).
Assures Hall Director staff is receiving appropriate support, vision and guidance from all of the Residence Education Leadership Team for their specialized areas in order for Hall Directors to have strong and balanced Residence Hall communities with each of the major components implemented in the communities: Academic Programs; Crisis Response and Administration; Diversity; Safety and Security, Leadership, and Service.
Crisis Management and Response:
Responsible for a residential area of ~3000 students, serving as the first point of contact for the hall director staff in discipline/conduct related cases and crisis response.
Develops, oversees, and implements practices for the handling of Residence Life discipline/conduct and crisis response cases.
Assures all high-level situations (suicidal ideation and attempts, sexual assault and/or harassment, bias related incidents, physical alterations, campus and community emergencies, and facility emergencies) are handled appropriately and in a timely manner.
Provides training, resources, expertise, and directives to all staff in the handling of discipline and crisis response.
Appropriately communicates all discipline and conduct situations to upper administration.
Serves as a member of the "Senior Staff On-call Rotation” for all on-campus housing and approximately 6200 students.
General Administrative Responsibilities:
Oversees budgets and appropriate spending of hall budgets (estimated $400,000.00) in her/his area.
Responsible for training and selection, selection and recruitment, and related budget lines totaling $70,000.
Facilitate communications to hall directors from other areas in Residence Life and other university units, including facility updates and problems, housing occupancy issues, health and safety concerns, and student outreach follow-up
Advises Office of Residence Life Committees.
Develops and oversees damage appeal processes.
Serves as a team member and liaison with other Assistant Directors and others within Residence Life and the larger university community.
Assists with student recruitment and retention by presenting Residence Life presentation during SOAR; assists with Preview Days.
Participates in local, state, regional, and national conferences and other professional development opportunities.
Serves on Division of Student Affairs and University level committees as appropriate.
Training and Selection:
Incorporates University, Division, and Departmental annual imperatives and learning outcomes in processes for training, scheduling and hiring.
Serves as the Office of Residence Life’s primary developer, coordinator, planner and implementer of Training and Development and Staff Selection Processes.
Responsible for the coordination and hiring processes for the Student Desk Manager (10), Academic Peer Mentors (25), Graduate Assistants (12), and Resident Advisor positions (170).
Researches and implements best practices for hiring these student positions that ensure these positions will not only contribute to the development of undergraduate students in the residence halls, but will also add to the continued professional development of students employed in these positions. Additionally, implementing best practices to hire a diverse candidate pool.
Develops, proposes, and implements training for all Residence Life staff members (350+).
Teaches, trains, provides resources, guides staff and students in the development and implementation of training programs for large-broad purposes to small- focused purposes.
Ensures all staff and appropriate student groups receive the training and resources needed to meet their needs and goals.
Coordinates training assessment efforts to ensure appropriate needs are met. Pre/post assessments are conducted for every training to gauge quality and to continual improve training efforts.
Co-coordinates development, review and revision of Office of Residence Life Learning Outcomes.
Works with other training units and resources on campus (and off, as feasible and appropriate) to provide the very best training services possible.
Knows and understand the Student Code of Conduct, FERPA, Title IV, VAWA, State and Local laws, and University and Office of Residence Life policy and procedure.
Serves as a University Level Hearing Officer adjudicating cases involving 2nd alcohol offenses, drug offenses, severe disorderly conduct, sexual harassment, and assault.
Provides training, resources, and expertise to all hall staff in the handling of discipline and crisis response.
Appropriately communicates all discipline and conduct situations to upper administration.
Supports area personnel in conduct decisions.

Knowledge, Skills or Abilities
Knowledge of college student development theory
Experience handling student crisis issues and situation. Some experience in developing and facilitating workshops, and in leadership development programs.
Knowledge of residence hall operations, creation, and management of residential learning communities
Experience with professional, graduate, and classified staff supervision
Experience planning, developing, managing and reconciling budgets
Prior work with crisis management, university crisis teams, and student conduct
Excellent interpersonal and written communication and administrative skills and a demonstrated desire to work with diverse individuals and groups
Experience with recruitment, training, and selection of staff
Experience with student organization advising. Knowledge of academic, leadership, or diversity programming, theory, and trends.
Ability to work on several projects concurrently
Creative problem-solving skills
Basic computer skills, budget management skills, and creative problem solving
The following Degree is required:
Master’s degree in College Student Personal, Higher Education or related field. Degree must be conferred at the time of application.
The following Experience is required:
2 years supervision of graduate or professional staff
2 years of experience working in a housing or residence life operation or higher education
The following Experience is preferred:
2 years of crisis management
2 years experience as part of an on-call duty rotation
2 years working with student conduct
Full-time Administrative staff position available. Administrative Grade Level 355. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Full benefits package available.
