The Office of Professional Programs and Extended Learning (OPPEL) supports professional master's students in their academic and personal success by building a community of support made up of faculty, staff, peers, alumni, and other rich resources from across the college and university. CALS professional master's degree programs currently include Animal Science, Food Science and Technology, Integrative Plant Science, Biological and Environmental Engineering, Global Development, Natural Resources and the Environment, and Landscape Architecture. These programs emphasize professional development and intellectual investigation for those who aim to leave the world better than they found it. OPPEL serves over 200 students preparing for meaningful careers in the corporate, non-profit, government, and non-governmental organization (NGO) sectors. The Opportunity
The CALS professional programs coordinator is integral to the professional master's student experience. This role serves as the first point of contact with students, creating a welcoming atmosphere and providing basic advising or directing them to resources internal or external to the University. Working closely with the assistant registrar, the coordinator tracks degree progress and manages capstone project processing. The coordinator oversees the newly-established ambassador program, meeting with student ambassadors from each field to help them build community within their own cohort and across the College. The coordinator will also:
- Advise faculty, staff, and students on degree requirements, including
- Inform strategic initiatives relating to the professional master's programs such as overseeing the degree progress tracking and graduation auditing with the OPPEL Assistant Registrar.
- Oversee the capstone project process by ensuring students enroll in the appropriate project course, provide basic resources about the project process and ensure the final projects are completed and uploaded into eCommons.
- Organize community-building and career services events, oversee the student ambassador program, and update OPPEL's student services Canvas site in collaboration with OPPEL directors and staff.
- Implement marketing tactics and research, coordinate recruitment events, foster the prospective student journey, and maintain the website in conjunction with the OPPEL Director of Program Development and Enrollment.
- Serve as point of contact for students that might be experiencing difficult or delicate circumstances that could result in referral to Cornell's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), CARE Team or other college and university resources as needed.
- Oversee the maintenance and security of the permanent records of all students matriculated.
- Provide data reports and analysis to assess the impact of student support services and monitor student satisfaction.
- Answer main phone line, coordinate staff schedules via Outlook calendaring, schedule classes, order supplies and process invoices, expense reimbursements and receipts.
- Keep the student lounge organized and stocked and maintain related equipment.
- Communicate with colleagues across CALS graduate fields and central administration in a positive and professional manner.
- Proactively help colleagues, when possible, and complete all tasks with adherence to university policies and respect for confidentiality.
This is a full-time (39 hours/week) contract-college position that is predominantly on-site. Work hours are Monday through Friday from 8am-4:30pm with occasional evenings when student events are scheduled.
What We Need:
- Associate's degree and 4-6 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
- Demonstrated record of providing exceptional customer service.
- Familiarity with advising systems and processes, such as Salesforce, Canvas and PeopleSoft.
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with utmost discretion and integrity, maintaining Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) compliance.
- Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy with a wide range of internal and external constituents.
- Experience that demonstrates sound judgment, creativity, curiosity and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while supporting team efforts.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; must be able to work quickly and effectively under pressure and balance conflicting priorities.
- Must be resourceful and receptive to new ideas and approaches.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Outlook applications and student record systems (e.g., PeopleSoft, Salesforce).
- Must be willing to work non-standard hours very occasionally.
If you possess these experiences this may be the role for you! There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, to include:
- Bachelor's degree.
- Experience advising graduate students, including international students.
- Demonstrated history of caring professionalism in dealing with advisees
- Experience coordinating student events.
- Familiarity with Cornell systems and processes, including Canvas, PeopleSoft, Salesforce, and eCommons student project uploads.
- Familiarity with online video conferencing, event registration and survey tools.
