Accessibility Specialist - Gies College of Business Teaching and Learning
Job Summary The Accessibility Specialist at Gies College of Business partners with faculty to design and develop in-person, online, and hybrid learning experiences, with a focus on digital accessibility initiatives. They supervise other accessibility staff and collaborate with various units on campus. The Accessibility Specialist ensures that all digital content offered through courses, programs, and MOOCs follows accessibility guidelines, providing guidance and support to faculty and staff, and conducting evaluations, remediation, and training sessions. This position is crucial in promoting access, equity, and inclusion.
Duties & Responsibilities
Development and Remediation of Accessible Materials
Identify and address accessibility barriers across all digital platforms.
Ensure course materials comply with legal mandates in various learning management systems.
Evaluate and provide guidance on remediation efforts for digital content and platforms.
Explore technologies and vendors to improve efficiency in creating and remediating accessible materials.
Advocate for accessibility needs and integrate them into all aspects of Teaching and Learning operations and services.
Collaborate with Disability Resources & Educational Services to plan and provide accessibility support for students' individual accommodations.
Supervision and Coordination
Supervise, mentor, train, and manage other staff who provide accessibility support.
Assign digital accessibility tasks to other staff.
Collect data and build reports on development workflows and production according to established priorities, key performance indicators, and metrics set by leadership.
Training
Develop and deliver training and professional development workshops to faculty and staff on accessibility best practices for teaching, course design, and related pedagogical needs.
Design and publish additional resources related to accessible content creation and delivery for faculty and staff.
Other Duties
Stay up to date with accessibility regulations and standards and provide guidance on compliance to stakeholders across the university.
Participate in other forms of professional development Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Required: Bachelor's degree
Experience: Required:
Experience working in digital accessibility and with digital accessibility tools
Ability to train and communicate effectively with faculty and staff on accessibility best practices
Preferred Qualifications
Education: Preferred: Master's degree in a related field; certification in digital accessibility
Experience: Preferred:
Experience supervising and managing staff
Experience working in higher education or with course design
Strong project management skills and experience in data collection and reporting
Experience with managing and/or utilizing closed captioning tools and providers for live as well as post-production content
Fluency and experience with the use of a variety of assistive technologies and accessibility testing and remediation tools
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required: A successful candidate should have:
English fluency
Knowledge of accessibility guidelines and standards (e.g., ADA, WCAG, Section 504 and 508, IITAA) Familiarity with current and emerging accessibility technologies and vendors
Preferred:
A mindset of flexibility and adaptability to change as the needs of the position change
Proficiency in MS Office and collaborative tools such as MS Teams and Zoom
Knowledge of LMS platforms including Canvas and Courser
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 6/9/2023. Salary is commensurate with experience.
The work location for this position may be flexible. Highly qualified candidates may be eligible to work full-time remotely within the US, on-premise at our offices in Champaign, Illinois, or a combination.
