The primary role of this position is to provide direct contact to students through individual academic skills coaching appointments. In addition, this position will have outreach responsibilities, develop content and facilitate academic skill workshops, and provide support to department programs offered to students. Depending on the education level of the selected candidate, responsibilities may also include teaching academic skills courses.
This position reports to the Assistant Director of Student Learning and Success.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic Success Coaching (65%)
Provide direct 1:1 academic skills coaching to students by developing an individualized, action-oriented plan grounded in student development theory and coaching skills, empowering students to maximize pathways to success and overcome barriers as they move toward degree progress and timely graduation. Appointments are offered virtually and in-person.
Provide ongoing support to students through multiple appointments, monitoring student progress through learning, reflection, and action planning.
Promote student success by utilizing coaching techniques to challenge and support students, leading to their increased self-awareness and self-efficacy.
Assess students' holistic needs and make appropriate referrals to campus partners.
Maintain detailed notes of student appointments and their progress through the APLUS system to aid in communication to students’ advisers and the wider campus community. Partner with Office Assistants to ensure appointment blocks are correctly established to facilitate scheduling of student coaching appointments.
Training, Education, and Outreach (25%)
As assigned, create and deliver presentations and events for University staff, faculty, and students on topics pertaining to academic skill development and support services awareness.
Provide consultation with colleagues to address the needs of students in developing academic skills in collaboration with departmental leadership.
As needed, teach credit-bearing academic skills courses such as OUE 1001, OUE 1101, and OUE 1102.
Contribute to the development and advancement of office-wide priorities.
Work independently to develop specific strategies and work plans to forward unit goals.
Additional Responsibilities (10%)
Participate as a collaborative and supportive team member.
Devote time to staying current in the field, participating in professional development opportunities, and bringing innovative and new information to the team.
Contribute to program development. Analyze data to understand trends. Make recommendations for improvement to practices.
Serve on campus committees as requested/elected.
As assigned, assist with daily office responsibilities.
Work on other projects as assigned, in support of OUE and department initiatives and programs.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
BA/BS degree plus at least two years of full-time relevant work experience, or a combination of education and relevant full-time work experience to equal at least six years.
Previous experience in an educational setting supporting students via academic advising, coaching, counseling, or other support activities.
Demonstrated understanding of student development theory and best practices relevant to working with diverse college students.
Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and skill development focused equity, diversity, and social justice.
Excellent organizational, time management, problem-solving, presentation, and communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, college student personnel psychology, counseling, social work, or other related field.
One year minimum of professional full-time work experience in Higher Education including previous experience providing one-to-one services through academic coaching, advising, or career counseling.
Experience facilitating academic skill courses or workshops.
