Education Requirements Completed masters degree in higher education, social work, student personnel, or related field and at least 5-7 years of progressive post-masters experience in case management/student services or a related functional area in higher education.
Degree/Major: Masters Degree in counseling, psychology, social work, higher education or appropriate field. Length of Experience: Five to seven years post masters degree working in a University setting. Experience in crisis management/response and as a case manager or member of a multi-disciplinary behavioral intervention team. Understanding of legal issues and relevant federal laws related to student affairs and higher education (FERPA, ADA, Clery, and Title IX). Essential Duties and Responsibilities Departmental and Administrative Oversight (20%)
Provide effective leadership for the department of Student Care and Outreach, guided by a mission and vision consistent with the mission, goals, and priorities of the university and Division of Student Life
Establish, implement, and assess departmental goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures
Provide direct oversight for the department budget; includes monitoring the budget, preparation and submission of the annual budget and long-term planning documents/proposals
Supervise, recruit, hire, train, and assess the job performance of assigned staff ([list professional staff positions], and student employees and volunteers), which includes developing training experiences and supervision strategies that provide skills, knowledge, and dispositions required to effectively meet established goals and objectives
Develop and implement effective departmental meeting and communication structures
Serve as a clearinghouse for resources, education, and programming related to student care and outreach
Strategic and Collaborative Leadership (40%
Collaborate with campus partners (Dean of Students, Counseling Services, Title IX Coordinator, University Police, Student Health Services, Disability Support Resources, and Behavioral Intervention Team, etc.) to ensure effective programs are in place that address identified student needs.
Coordinate with graduate program directors and staff to ensure graduate students have awareness and access to appropriate support resources and programs.
Coordinate university response to critical student concerns (including, but not limited to, alcohol and drug overdose, psychological crises, hospitalization, suicidal ideation). Develop and oversee processes for identification and early intervention for students displaying warning signs of emotional/academic distress.
Provide administrative case management/support coordination for students who may be having concerns (including mental health concerns) and who are also exhibiting disruptive or problematic behavior in the academic environment.
Develop intervention and post-intervention support strategies, assessing the social, psychological and basic needs of students and developing an appropriate plan of action to decrease behavioral/conduct concerns and increase academic persistence.
Conduct regular assessment, evaluation, and improvement of student concern outreach protocols and interventions.
Develop strategies to manage potentially harmful or disruptive behavior to protect the safety and rights of both the student and University community.
Provide psycho-education to faculty, staff and students on topics related to managing situations related to distressed and disruptive students.
Develop and distribute appropriate reports as requested (e.g. monthly departmental reports and statistical data, reports national trends, etc.).
Direct Student Care and Outreach Responsibilities (30%)
Meet with students on day of hospital discharge or next business day to discuss continuity of care plan and determine if treatment recommendation compliance and/or further assessment may be required based on level of risk/disruption.
Coordinate same-day contact related to concerns of potential current suicidal ideation (SI) or self-harm (SH). This may include activating emergency response and on-call systems, follow-up with reporters to request clarifying information, or direct follow-up with student of concern. Refer to appropriate resources or for further assessment per protocols.
Coordinate medical safety policy response, including meeting with students for preliminary drug and alcohol assessments and making appropriate referrals.
Oversee medical leave and return processes. Including with students returning from medical withdrawals or leave of absence who have recommendations for continuity of care. Determine schedule for follow-up meetings.
Meet with students who may be determined 'high risk' by Student Concerns Team (based on exhibited behaviors and risk rubric) to discuss ongoing compliance with treatment recommendations, explore stressors and coping strategies, and link with university/community resources as-needed.
Provide guidance within one business day to faculty, staff, students, families, and community partners regarding responding to and referring students of concern.
Additional Responsibilities (10%)
Support university events, including, but not limited to: Convocations, Commencement, Family Weekend, and events related to Admissions and/or New Student Orientation
Serve as a member of a Student Life Care and Response Team, including serving in rotation as a senior administrator on-call for the Student Life Emergency Response Team (4-6 weeks/year)
Serve on university, divisional, or departmental committees, task forces, and search committees
Other related duties as assigned by the assistant dean of students
