The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Illinois) and Carle Health System (Carle) have embarked on an exciting endeavor by creating the nation's first engineering-based college of medicine. In partnership, Carle and Illinois are seeking an exceptional leader to serve as the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Development. A member of the Dean's executive leadership team, the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Development will provide overall administrative leadership for faculty affairs at the college level, while working closely with department heads and the Senior Director for Faculty Development for faculty development opportunities broadly in instruction/teaching, research, service/professional, and innovation/entrepreneurialism, and within an innovative, engineering-based college of medicine.
Responsibilities of the position include overseeing faculty policies, evaluation, engagement opportunities, and development in compliance with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) standards and aligned with the objectives of the college. The Associate Dean will report directly to the Dean of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.
This is a rare opportunity to join an enthusiastically engaged, multi-disciplinary group of academic scholars, health care professionals, and specialists in medical education at the intersection of engineering, biological, and clinical sciences. This is a part-time or full-time, 12-month, non-tenured, administrative position, with effort anticipated to be 50% - 100%. Consideration will be given for a zero-percent time, non-tenured faculty appointment in the college, based on the individual's qualifications and interests; opportunities may also exist for concurrent appointment in another University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign college. Future possibilities exist for a partial time faculty appointment and/or partial clinical release time up to 20%. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications; the start date will be as soon as possible after the close of the search.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
Create infrastructure and resources available to support faculty scholarship, programs, or activities offered to assist faculty in preparing for promotion, including making policies available regarding whether scholarly activities are required for retention, promotion, and the granting of tenure for some or all faculty.
Create and update faculty resources to grow faculty skills for academic engagement (research, teaching, clinical excellence, mentoring, and innovation).
Communicate and manage policies and procedures for faculty appointments, renewals of appointments, promotions, granting of tenure (if relevant), and dismissal.
Develop and recommend new policies and procedures regarding appointments, renewals, promotions, tenure, and dismissal for approval by the College APT committee.
Communicate new policies and other types of changes that require faculty comment and how such input from faculty is obtained into the governance process.
Support faculty governance matters, including the development and management of faculty groups (faculty by department, standing and working committees).
Create strategies for monitoring and managing compliance and actual or perceived conflicts of interest, including required faculty forms, policy documents, FERPA, faculty handbook, and training.
Investigate claims and matters related to compliance.
Assist with development of new faculty sections and departments in the College of Medicine.
Assist and remain neutral on matters of faculty grievances.
Serve as an ex-officio member to the college level Faculty Grievance Committee and the Appointments, Promotions and Tenure Committee (and committee equivalents at the department level).
Define and manage budget and staffing planning for the Office of Faculty Affairs and Development.
Administrative Leadership
Track anticipated attrition in the basic science, engineering, and clinical faculty, including faculty retirements, and work with human resources for directed faculty hiring/engagement efforts.
Establish recruiting and retention programs and monitors efforts aimed at ensuring diversity and inclusion within faculty ranks.
Work with direct reports in OFAD to manage and deliver our onboarding and orientation program for new faculty. Establish and drive a faculty mentorship program.
Develop, communicate, and establish faculty engagement opportunities, along with programs targeting faculty retention, and assistance with specific retention cases.
Provide oversight for the Faculty Awards and Recognition Committee and assist with obtaining resources for committee.
Assist with annual planning, advertising, recruiting, reviewing, selecting, and negotiating responsibilities for the Health Innovation Professor (HIP) faculty program.
Executive Leadership and Collaboration with the Office of Academic Affairs and Departments
Evaluate, in conjunction with Academic Affairs, the current and anticipated adequacy of faculty numbers, specialty and discipline mix, qualifications, engagement, and availability to support the medical education program and the other missions of Carle Illinois.
Assist the Department Heads and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in recruiting and developing a diverse faculty from a broad spectrum of disciplines who will work together to contribute biomedical science, engineering, and clinical knowledge, skills and abilities to provide a professional education curriculum (MD, MD-PhD, MS programs) in an active learning environment.
Work closely with Carle Illinois Human Resources for faculty appointment processing and review.
Develop faculty profiles for all Carle Illinois faculty that includes credentials, experience, interests, roles, scholarship, professional memberships and awards.
Support development and oversight of department bylaws, policies, guidelines documents, and overall faculty governance structure.
Other
Serve as a member of the college's Executive Leadership Team, and other teams and task forces as designated by the Dean. As needed, attend other meetings of the college as well as joint and/or external committees and groups.
As a member of the college's leadership team, help foster a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. Support diversity in all aspects of the educational experience and foster positive collegial relationships among students, staff, and faculty.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships; work cooperatively and collegially with others in a manner consistent with a workplace of dignity and respect; support and engage in equal employment opportunity principles, rules, and regulations.

Perform other related duties or projects as assigned to further the mission of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.
Required Qualifications
Education:
M.D., D.O., Ph.D., Ed.D, or other relevant graduate degree.
Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of senior-level administrative experience in higher education or health care, preferably in a leadership role within a medical college.
Experience with faculty affairs, faculty development, or some combination thereof.
Experience supervising staff in a university or health care environment.
Experiences demonstrating leadership, strategic planning and operational effectiveness resulting in exceptional outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong familiarity with the policies and procedures associated with the area of faculty affairs and development in an academic institution, preferably in a medical school setting.
Strong experience with clinical/medical faculty development, mentorship, and knowledge of faculty engagement within academic medical centers.
Record that includes experience developing innovative programs for faculty in areas such as instruction/teaching, research, professionalism/skills, innovation/entrepreneurialism.
Record of excellent performance as a skilled manager with the ability to meet budgets, develop people, and work collaboratively.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Record of experience demonstrating skills and abilities to communicate successfully with stakeholders including faculty, administrators, staff, students, alumni, benefactors, members of the professional community, and business partners.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty and administrators.
Record of highly ethical conduct, a sense of respect for confidentiality, a high level of professionalism, collegiality, and a strong record of attention to detail.

Appointment Information This is a part-time or full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 4/14/2023. Salary is commensurate with experience.
