Georgetown University's Office of Community Engagement helps to fulfill Georgetown's commitment to the common good in the District of Columbia and the metropolitan region. The office supports the university's growth and economic development efforts, including master planning; facilitates and develops relationships with community organizations, local governments, and civic organizations; supports community-based research and scholarship; and strengthens the university's partnership with our neighbors.
The Assistant Director, a full-time professional staff member of the Office of Neighborhood Life, develops and implements a comprehensive program designed to educate and support undergraduate and graduate students living off campus in multiple neighborhoods immediately adjacent to Georgetown University's main campus as outlined in the University's Campus Plan.
To be successful, the Assistant Director demonstrates a thorough understanding of and commitment to building town gown relationships as well as the education and character development of college students. Further, they attend occasional meetings in the evenings and weekends and to walk the neighborhood at times; and are willing and available to provide physical labor for occasions such as the annual move in/move out drives and the neighborhood cleanup.
Reporting to the Director of Neighborhood Life, the Assistant Director provides programmatic efforts, orientations for students on and off campus as it relates to living in the surrounding neighborhoods, participates in an 24/7 on-call duty rotation, implements the University trash monitoring program, and operationalizes the Student Neighborhood Assistance Program (SNAP). Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Policy
Maintains and oversees the trash monitoring program, which includes daily monitoring and documenting of trash violations in the neighborhood, meeting regularly with Facilities to ensure the SOP is being executed fully, and ensuring Student Conduct is meeting quickly and regularly with students.
Develops, implements and communicates policies regarding violations of the District's waste disposal regulations.
Develops with Facilities, Residential Living, Sustainability Office and DC's Department of Public Works a comprehensive bulk trash program to meet the additional demands of student move in and move out.
Responds to calls to the University Helpline, a 24/7 monitored phone line to report inappropriate student behavior in the neighborhoods.
Tracks student and non-student trash violations through Maxient, DC's 311 system and Google forms, and prepares semesterly reports.
Tracks local off-campus addresses of all students living off campus.
Works to ensure that all students are renting homes that are safe and meeting the minimum health and safety standards required by the District of Columbia.
Collaborates with DC's Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) to create and maintain a system where listings on the off-campus housing listings website are compliant with DC housing and licensing regulations.
Builds collaborative relationships with various city agencies such as the Office of the Tenant Advocate (OTA), Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA), Department of Public Works (DPW), Alcohol and Beverage Regulatory Authority (ABRA), Department of Health (DOH) and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT).
Educational
Interacts with students, parents, members of the Georgetown University community, and residents of the adjacent neighborhoods
Advises students and informs neighbors on city laws and university regulations regarding trash, noise, leases, and deposits, mediating students' interpersonal conflicts and landlord/tenant disputes.
Creates and implements bi-annual orientation sessions for students living off-campus regarding the regulations, policies and impacts of students in the neighborhood.
Advises students regarding landlord/tenant issues, and provides appropriate information and referrals.
Communicates essential information to students living off campus, including program information and security alert notices.
Serves as principal liaison between students living off campus and University regarding non-academic issues.
Advises the Georgetown Student Tenant Association (GSTA) student organization and meets regularly with the Student Advocacy Office (SAO).
Participates as a team member within SNAP at least once a month during the academic year.
Serves as the primary web content creator and editor for the office website.
Programming
Helps to develop enhanced programming with on-campus groups to bring students back behind the gates for fun and socializing.
Develops programs and initiatives to build goodwill and neighborly ties between off-campus students and neighborhood residents.
Coordinates and develops annual meetings with other DC University Community Relations offices and various city agencies.
Coordinates the annual Housing Fair.
Supervision
Acts as a resource for daily operations in the office.
Maintains familiarity with all aspects of the Director's job and be ready to assume that role in their absence.
Assists the Director with management of SNAP - for example, creating monthly schedules, assist with payroll, planning and implementing semesterly training, and planning team activities.
Supervises up to two student workers.
Reviews and provides input to the departmental budget.
Qualifications
Master's degree in higher education or student affairs administration, counseling, or related field
Mediation experience to monitor, adjust, and reset (when appropriate) expectations of neighbors and students.
Clear communication with students and neighbors regarding expectations and University obligations, and to define, explain, and defend those expectations and obligations.
Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to take initiative and to work in a supportive and collaborative way with students, colleagues, community members and city officials.
Ability to work efficiently, attend to details, and follow through with assigned projects or tasks.
Ability to build strong relationships with colleagues, students, community members and city officials.
Preferred qualifications
2-4 years of post-graduate experience in higher education student advising and/or student programming required; off-campus student advising/programming
Experience with town-gown relations or government related experience
Knowledge of higher education practices, student needs, and community partnerships
