DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Division of Global Engagement (GE) advances the University's teaching, research, and service mission by working collaboratively throughout the institution to promote global engagement and advance campus internationalization by facilitating international mobility for students and faculty. GE serves as the primary unit responsible for improving the international student experience and engagement on campus, promoting faculty engagement in international initiatives, and developing strategic partnerships abroad. GE interacts with campus leadership on strategic planning and initiatives to elevate the reputation of UCSC globally. GE units include Global Learning, International Student Services and Programs (ISSP), and Global Initiatives.
The International Student Advisor is part of a dynamic team of professionals committed to supporting the international population at UC Santa Cruz, with over 1,500 international students and 300 scholars representing more than 50 countries worldwide. The incumbent provides the full range of immigration services to international students on F-1 or J-1 visas and serves as Designated School Official (DSO) for the F-1 student program, and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the J-1 exchange visitor program.
The International Student Advisor utilizes in-depth, advanced knowledge to interpret and provide guidance on federal immigration regulations as they pertain to our international students and may advise scholars. They independently advise students and their departments and recommend solutions related to immigration status and overall immigration strategy. The incumbent advises staff, faculty, and management on immigration and intercultural issues as they arise, and works with management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures with regard to UCSC international students and exchange visitor experience and programming. The International Student Advisor ensures a smooth transition and acclimation process for our international students by participating in the planning and implementation of programming such as orientations and workshops. They actively contribute to developing, designing, and implementing programs and systems needed to support and enrich international students' experience at UC Santa Cruz.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $61,500 to $75,000/Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Advises international students in F-1 and J-1 status on a wide range of immigration-related matters and other support issues. Serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) for the F-1 student visa program and as Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the J-1 exchange visitor program. Interprets complex federal immigration regulations and researches responses before providing advice to students and may advise scholars on complex situations affecting enrollment, employment, travel, family, and personal issues. These include regulations established by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of State (DOS), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), and the Social Security Administration (SSA). Ensures that international students are familiar with the regulations and comply with them independently of and in relation to university policies and procedures. Stays abreast of promising practices in the field about policies and procedures for efficient and effective processing of visa paperwork and timely and sensitive immigration advising resulting in a high level of customer satisfaction. Evaluates customers' needs and the unit's success in meeting those needs. Maintains expertise in advising on all immigrant and nonimmigrant options for UC Santa Cruz international students.
25% - Data Management
Assists with data management and document production for the F-1 and J-1 populations. Participates in ongoing review and improvements of processes and tools to ensure high-quality service and customer satisfaction. May include scholar documentation as appropriate.
10% - Orientation and Programs
Participates in planning and implementation of international student orientation, cross-cultural, social, and other support programming, employment, and other workshops for international students and scholars. Represents ISSP at campus-wide signature events for newly admitted students, current international students, international parents and families, international alumni, and the international community.
10% - Collaboration
Coordinates efforts and maintains relationships with key campus stakeholders and partners abroad through outreach, training, and workshops to enhance and improve internal processes and to enhance our global network.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Demonstrated knowledge of F-1 and J-1 visa regulations for students.
Working knowledge of advising techniques in a higher education setting.
Knowledge of common computer application programs used in higher education settings.
Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures to improve processes and / or services to students and scholars.
Demonstrated Multicultural/Intercultural competencies; successful prior experience working with international populations.
Effective written communication skills; demonstrated attention to detail.
Effective verbal communication and presentation skills.
Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and successfully work with students, scholars and campus stakeholders.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Experience as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) in a higher education setting.
Experience working in database interface tools such as Sunapsis, or equivalent.
Experience working with academic departments in a higher education setting.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
Will be required to work a hybrid work schedule, days of the week and number of days to be determined, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident to hold a DSO (Designated School Official) title in order to work in SEVIS.
