The Highlights:
The Assistant Director of Residence Life reports to the Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life and is responsible for the selection and training of the department's professional and student staff. The Assistant Director directly supervises 4 full-time Residence Directors. As a part of the Department of Housing and Residence Life Main Office, the Assistant Director plays a key leadership role in developing, implementing, and evaluating crisis management procedures; budget management; strategic planning; community building; student retention efforts; project administration; and relationship building with campus partners.
Provides oversight to departmental Training and Selection Committee (TSC) including developing training for Resident Assistants/Senior Resident Assistants, including monthly Resident Assistant Education Series (in-services). Oversees all aspects of the hiring process for student staff: reviews resumes; selects and manages the interview committee; prepares evaluation materials; and compiles interview notes for Human Resources' reporting purposes.
Oversees creation of training content and schedule for full time live-in staff: both for summer training and on-going trainings year round.
Serves as a conduct officer for Student Conduct cases, particularly higher level cases that have risen to this position's level. Addresses student and parent issues arising from student conduct, counseling, and crisis-related concerns.
Coordinates residential outreach efforts especially as they relate to harm reduction and campus affinity, including but not limited to, Welcome Week, Fest, and the Winter Wellness Challenge. Serves as the liaison to Athletics, Campus Recreation, Health Promotion & Wellness, Chartwells, Admissions, and other Student Affairs offices.
Assists with residence hall student retention initiatives. Proposes and assists in the development of living options and/or other student retention strategies; implements and evaluates special living options/theme floors; and provides supervision of academic living/learning initiatives.
Participates in departmental planning, meetings, and trainings for professional and student staff.
Advises the Resident Assistant Advisory Board and the Residence Hall Council and represents the department on external and university committees as assigned.
Assists the Director and Associate Directors with departmental policy and procedure development, strategic planning, and program assessment. Recommends policy changes and new programming initiatives.
24 hour on-call responsibility. Often serves as the first responder when crisis situations occur (in person or via university-supported phone) and is tasked with contacting the emergency contact for students in certain high-level incidents. May need to fill in for a Residence Director/Area Coordinator in their absence.
The Assistant Director directly supervises 4 full-time Residence Directors. Supervision is approximately 20% of this position.
The Assistant Director oversees a budget of approx. $10,000 annually. The position is also involved in the larger, departmental budget planning as a member of the management team.
What You'll Need:
Master's degree and 3 to 5 years of successful, full-time experience in higher education administration, with a strong emphasis in student conduct and outreach programming strongly preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Successful experience in supervising full-time staff.
PREFERRED: Five or more years of relevant experience strongly preferred, with additional emphasis in budget management or development of living-learning communities.
The assistant director is responsible for responding to emergency situations as needed. Cell phone coverage is expected 24 hours a day, 7 days a week when on call. The ability to respond to a telephone call after hours is essential.
