The Ohio State University Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine invites applications for a 12-month, tenure-track faculty position focused on Applied One Health. This faculty member will be expected to lead and support collaborative One Health activities in line with the universitys vision of being the model 21st-century public, land grant, research, urban, community-engaged institution and consistent with the updated definition of One Health. The successful candidate will be responsible for growing and enhancing One Health education through teaching, coordination and expansion of current programs, including but not limited to the Master of Public Health - Veterinary Public Health (MPH-VPH) and professional (DVM) programs. The successful applicant will also be engaged in complementary research activity related to interrelationships between animals, humans, plants, and the environment. In alignment with the significant teaching expectation, applicants with experiences developing curriculum and implementing educational programs and/or trainings (including distance-based modalities) are highly desired. Applicants with demonstrated practice or applied experiences implementing a One Health approach in an educational, scientific, government, and/or clinical setting are highly desired. Diverse disciplinary approaches are encouraged to apply; however, special consideration will be given to those with clear evidence of expertise in infectious disease epidemiology, zoonotic diseases, vector-borne diseases, food protection, biosecurity, or antimicrobial resistance as related to veterinary public health.
Applicants must have:
A professional health sciences degree (e.g., DVM/VMD, CNP, MD) together with advanced training in the field (e.g., MS, MPH) and relevant One Health experience; or a PhD in a field of study relevant to One Health with an appropriate combination of education and relevant One Health experience
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to disseminate information to a variety of learners/stakeholders
Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with other faculty, staff, and external constituents, including those from diverse disciplinary/educational/cultural backgrounds
Experience teaching at the college level and/or providing workforce development (i.e., in-service) trainings
A history of leading or participating in research or service projects in One Health thematic areas that emphasize science or other high-impact outcomes, including but not limited to publishing peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts and acquiring extramural research and training grants.
Desired but not required qualifications include:
Board certification in a One Health-related specialization (e.g., ACVPM)
The successful candidate will be part of the core teaching faculty within the department, with primary responsibility for the development and delivery of distance courses targeting remote graduate students and working professionals. Additional contributions to core and elective courses in the professional DVM and graduate curricula related to the candidates expertise will be expected. The successful candidate will also be expected to develop new collaborative One Health course content targeting diverse professional and graduate student populations at Ohio State. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue additional courtesy academic appointments in other Colleges where appropriate (e.g., Public Health, Environment and Natural Resources), and to routinely mentor and advise both graduate and professional students.
Development of a collaborative research program that includes extramural funding will be expected and should complement the successful applicants teaching activities. This research program is expected to complement existing research programs within the College and should focus on applied (rather than basic) research. Although there is no formal Extension teaching appointment, the successful applicant can expect to serve as a One Health expert resource for both internal and external constituent groups, and to communicate with state, national and international stakeholders regularly. Candidates with specific interests and expertise in issues of current concern to Ohio constituents, including health professional, environmental, or animal industry organizations, and local, state and federal agencies are desired.
The successful applicant will have a strong background in infectious disease epidemiology, preventive medicine, and population health. This will result in collaborative scholarly teaching, research, and outreach focused on the dissemination of knowledge to prevent and control infectious diseases of importance to veterinary medicine, environmental health, and public health. Distribution of duties will vary depending on the experience and ability of the candidate but is anticipated to be approximately 40% teaching, 15% teaching administration, 35% research, and 10% service.
Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with education and experience. Faculty rank will be based upon qualifications and experience but is expected to be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Final candidates are subject to successful completion of a background check. A drug screen or physical may be required during the post offer process.
