The Dean of Students Office at UC Santa Cruz promotes personal development and successful navigation of campus life thereby strengthening the student experience. This is accomplished by facilitating partnerships, developing policies, creating meaningful opportunities, and providing direct support to cultivate a vibrant, healthy, and inclusive UCSC community.
The Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Education (OSCCE) is a newly established/re-envisioned office (previously the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards) dedicated to just, equitable and student centered approaches to the administration of student conduct and resolution of conflict. OSCCE provides multiple educational programs and pathways to support our diverse student body in navigating behavior change, improved decision making and resolving conflicts, in order to foster student success and a healthy campus community.
Manages all aspects of the Conflict Education and Healing programs offered through the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Education (OSCCE). Develops and directs programs which may include but are not limited to restorative justice (RJ), University-wide Alcohol and other Drug (AOD) prevention and education programs, conflict mediation, conflict coaching, and shuttle diplomacy. Formulates policies and procedures for Conflict Education and Healing. In partnership with OSCCE leadership, develops the long- and short-term organizational goals for Conflict Education and Healing. Serves as a subject matter expert both internally and externally on alternative dispute resolution and inclusive conflict excellence. Manages the operating budget and human resources for Conflict Education and Healing.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary:$91,850 - $107,800 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience. Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary above the posted range. JOB DUTIES
30% - Leadership and Management of Conflict Education and Healing Programs
Provides direction and oversight for the conflict education and healing programs offered by OSCCE including but not limited to restorative justice (RJ), University-wide Alcohol and other Drug (AOD) prevention and education programs such as Alcohol EDU and BASICS, the Responsible Action Plan (RAP), conflict mediation, conflict coaching, and shuttle diplomacy.
Provides oversight of conflict education and healing caseload, significant incidents, and trends. Primarily responsible for the distribution and management of cases among conflict education and healing personnel. Tracks caseloads and other influencing factors to maintain an equitable workload distribution of cases. Oversees the preparation of ongoing, quarterly and yearly conflict education and healing status reports suitable for circulation within the campus conduct community.
Interfaces regularly with CHES senior managers on complex cases involving residential students. Collaborates with staff within other offices with a nexus to conflict education and healing programs (e.g., Title IX Office) as necessary.
Ensures the consistent and responsible handling of conflict education and healing cases, taking into consideration campus safety needs, the rights of the individual and other legal requirements, and the provision of opportunities for student development. Consults with Campus Counsel as appropriate.
Serves as a central resource for consultation and evaluation of emerging concerns to prevent or mitigate problematic behavior/violation of policies.
Leads ongoing assessment and evaluation of conflict education and healing processes, and recommends and oversees the implementation of improvements based on findings.
Coordinates and participates in ongoing review and revision to pertinent policies (e.g., student handbook), communications regarding conflict education and healing programs (e.g., websites, social media, etc.), and staff training manuals.
Assists with Federal, State and UC audits on Clery, Title IX and student conflict cases as necessary on behalf of OSCR.
Serves as a liaison to Student Conduct Directors at the other UC campuses and the UC Office of the President as needed.
25% - Conflict Education and Healing Case Management
Oversees conflict education and healing case management including but not limited to the following categories of concerns; interpersonal conflicts between students or students and other community members; first-time and/or minor concerns about AOD use or housing policy violations; sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking; allegations relating to the activities of campus-wide student organizations; hate/bias reports; allegations arising from student demonstrations; and allegations of misuse and compromise of UCSC computing systems. May carry a conflict education and healing caseload as needed.
Addresses complex and challenging conflict education and healing cases which may require advanced expertise (e.g., intercultural conflicts necessitating a high level of cultural fluency).
Maintains compliance with all Federal and State mandates regarding specialized student conduct training.
Works regularly in the student conflict database, which includes preparation of case resolution letters and any other related documents.
Applies principles of student development in the administration of conflict education and healing programs. Advises students and makes referrals to appropriate resources and agencies. Develops resolutions and conducts follow-up as appropriate.
Interprets, conveys information, and enforces federal and state laws, university conduct, and housing regulations within campus residential settings. Consults with Campus Counsel, UCSC PD, and other subject matter experts for interpretation and application of laws.
Meets with the Associate Director College Student Life group (AD group) on a regular basis to review outstanding conflict education and healing cases and to discuss caseload allocation.
In collaboration with the ADOS-SCCE, updates and maintains the sanction/student conduct outcomes matrix for residential and non-residential cases.
20% - Staff Supervision
Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, and direct supervision and evaluation of Conflict Education and Healing personnel within OSCCE.
Provides leadership and direction for training programs, workshops, coaching and mentoring as needed. Training topics include but are not limited to skills development in counseling, conflict resolution, restorative justice, programming, and crisis management.
Ensures that all staff members follow and enforce University and College policies and procedures.
Monitors performance of professional OSCCE staff and others with job responsibilities related to conflict education and healing. Works with conflict education and healing staff and appropriate supervisors to address performance concerns.
15% - Program Development and Training
Develops and delivers outcome-based training for all personnel responsible for conflict resolution within OSCCE and CHES, including but not limited to Senior Directors College Student Life, Associate Directors College Student Life, Associate Directors, Coordinators for Conduct and Education, Coordinators for Residential Education and student staff members.
Manages and administers large-scale educational programs, trainings, and sanctions (e.g. AlcoholEdu, BASICS, etc.) and collaborates, as needed, with appropriate campus stakeholders including Title IX and SHOP. Provides leadership around curriculum development and implementation efforts with a nexus to Student Conduct and Conflict Education.
Develops and oversees programmatic initiatives to engage the student community in student conduct and conflict matters that affect the campus.
5% - Office Leadership
Alongside the Associate Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities, supports Associate Dean of Students & Director of Student Conduct and Conflict Education (ADOS-SCCE) in leadership for OSCCE's programs and personnel.
Serves as a member of and may chair the hate/bias response team. Coordinates management of and response to assigned cases. Conducts initial responses to all reports to offer timely support and resources. Tracks actions and resolutions on all reports, including follow-up as needed with assigned responders.
Supports the ADOS-SCCE in administering the policy on student grievance procedures. May serve as complaint resolution officer (CRO) for informal resolution of grievances.
Provides backup system administrator support for the student conflict database on behalf of OSCCE and collaborating units such as the Behavioral Intervention Team, the Hate/Bias Response team and the Division of Undergraduate Education. Oversees updates and modifications to the conflict database.
5% - Other Duties
Serves on various campus committees such as the Title IX Case Management Team, the Coordinated Community Response Team, the Slug Support Team, Student Handbook Review committee, We Are Slugs Team, Campus Clery Review committee, the Drone Taskforce, Police Chief's Advisory Board, Behavioral Intervention Team (as needed), the Committee on Campus Engagement and various policy subcommittees as assigned.
Represents the department and/or unit on campus, in the community, at the UC system-wide level, and in appropriate professional organizations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Thorough knowledge of student conflict education theory and practice (e.g., the spectrum of resolution options model, inclusive conflict excellence, etc.) and its intersections with student conduct theory and practice (e.g., adjudication, legal issues in student conduct, etc.).
Thorough knowledge of student development theory and scholarship.
Familiarity with the law as it pertains to higher education, especially relating to student life, student conduct, due process, individual rights, liability issues, alternative dispute resolution, and privacy.
Strong knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
Leadership skills to motivate employees and influence attitudes and behaviors.
Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
Ability in problem identification, reasoning, and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
Ability to conduct risk assessment and evaluate risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Demonstrated ability to work independently on sensitive, confidential, often volatile, and complicated issues with tact and political acumen.
Demonstrated ability to interact effectively, productively and sensitively with students, faculty, staff and parents per the standards and practices related to the Family Educational Rights Privacy Act (FERPA) and other relevant policies and best practices.
Demonstrated ability to develop, facilitate, and lead training curricula, presentations, and other learning activities to a wide variety of audiences, such as faculty, deans, department chairs, students, and staff.
Demonstrated technical skills sufficient to use and support the maintenance of a complex and secure database.
Demonstrated knowledge of, commitment to and experience working with members of African, Black & Caribbean; Asian, Asian American & Pacific Islander; Chicanx/Latinx; Native/Indigenous; South West Asian & North African; Disabled/Neuro Diverse; Trans & Non-Binary; Queer; Undocumented and other historically marginalized or underrepresented communities. Successful candidates will demonstrate measurable experience employing practices/praxes grounded in intersectional approaches and understandings of identity and will possess knowledge of and insight about different religious traditions that intersect with many of the identities and communities listed above.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree in higher education, student development, conflict resolution, or another area relevant to the work of OSCCE.
Professional certifications in knowledge and skill sets relevant to student conflict education (e.g., restorative justice, mediation, etc.)
Ability to speak, read, and write in both English and at least one additional language such as Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Tagalog, Arabic, or other.
Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs (e.g., Advocate student conduct database, Google Suite).
Knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Knowledge of University policies, processes, and procedures.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
