Rutgers University-Newark, an urban, public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Student Counselor/Academic Advisor for the School of Arts and Sciences' Office of Academic Services. Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Transfer Services in the Office of Academic Services (OAS) in the School of Arts and Sciences-Newark (SASN).
The Academic Advisor is a team member in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, customer service-focused environment, who utilizes a proactive and student-centered advisement approach. The duties include and are not limited to the following;
Provides academic advising and counseling to undergraduate students.
Assists them with problem solving, and teaches them to advocate for themselves.
Establishes and maintains productive contact with assigned caseload of Newark College of Arts & Sciences (NCAS) and University College-Newark (UC-N) students to counsel them and facilitate their declaration of major, progress toward graduation, and successful career and/or professional development.
Works with the OAS transfer services team on the coordination, development, and facilitation of initiatives targeting transfer students, including, but not limited to, workshops, transcript evaluations, new student registration and outreach, advanced placement credit assessment, and recruiting events.
Updates and maintains accurate, detailed, current, complete, relevant content for the University's degree audit program, office website, social media websites, and all promotional materials. Liaisons with relevant IT personnel for OAS databases, including coordinating programming, maintenance, and implementation.
Creates and facilitates initiatives for students in their junior and senior years, maintaining contact and communicating information in effective, efficient, and innovative manners.
Collects data, assesses data, and produces comprehensive, complete, and accurate reports for the transfer services team.
Assists with office events, including, but not limited to, commencement activities, major/minor fair, as well as other events and duties as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a bachelor's degree in student counseling, college student personnel, psychology, social work, education, higher education administration, or a related field and two years relevant experience in academic counseling/advisement; or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of transfer student populations and programs, student development and counseling theories and applications, and workshop design and presentation.

Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite. Will use the Student Records Database (SRDB), degree audits, Maxient, in-house applications, and any database or program utilized by the University to perform the duties of this position now or in the future. Must be familiar with or learn the office equipment, software, and specialized programs and/or materials needed to support the effective and efficient performance of this position.

OAS is a fast-paced, deadline-driven, customer service-focused environment. Responsibilities will include attendance at and participation in evening and weekend activities, as needed.
