Job Description:
The Assistant Director of Fellowships and Post Graduate Opportunities plays a significant role in carrying out the work of Brownâ™s fellowships advising team. The fellowships advising team typically works with over 450 students a year who explore and apply for a range of national and international fellowships including the Rhodes, Marshall, Fulbright, Truman and Udall scholarships. Advising practices emphasize student learning and self-exploration, offering guidance and writing support that invites students to notice, cultivate, and effectively articulate their curiosities and goals.
The Assistant Director is responsible for contributing to strategic planning and the cultivation of the programâ™s mission to empower students to imagine and pursue creative possibilities for engagement beyond Brown. The position is responsible for student outreach, presentations and programming, advising, select fellowship review and nomination processes, and the preparation of some institutional letters of nomination. The Assistant Director holds primary responsibility for advising on some fellowships, the selection of which is based on the incumbentâ™s academic background, expertise, and interests, as well as the needs of the office. The position will work with faculty review and selection committees, as well as national foundations. The position may also support applicants for post-graduate opportunities through work with the Pre-Professional Advising team.
Qualifications
Bachelorâ™s degree required. Five to seven yearsâ™ related work experience such as college-level teaching or advising, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Masterâ™s degree or terminal degree preferred.
Working knowledge of current fellowships application processes preferred.
Outstanding written and oral communication skills; effective presentation skills.
Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment, as well as demonstrated success in collaborative work with diverse faculty, students, and staff.
Demonstrated experience advocating for and making change towards aspirational goals for diversity, inclusion, and equity while supporting students from historically underrepresented and/or minoritized backgrounds is required.
Some experience with assessment and holistic review processes, or demonstrated commitment to assessment and gathering and acting on constituent feedback.
Superior judgment and discretion in handling FERPA-protected and confidential materials.
Commitment to co-curricular endeavors and student empowerment, and a holistic approach to advising.
Excellent written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across multiple internal and external audiences.
Ability to function effectively under deadlines and manage multiple time-sensitive demands simultaneously.
Occasional evening and weekend work required for critical College and University events.
