Teaching – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching (including lab, studio, or production management) may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.
The Lecturer/Advisor (LA) teaches the introductory engineering and engineering technology courses; provides accurate and timely career exploration and academic advising; participates in recruiting events and summer orientation and registration; supports OSDS student development programs: the residential Freshman Learning Community, MAPS (Maximizing Academic and Professional Success), ENGAGE ME (multicultural Engineers), WE (Women Engineers) ENGAGE, and the Leadership Academy; participates in activities designed to engage alums and employers; and assists in writing proposals for external funding.
The LA must stay abreast of all curriculum revisions and changes in policies and procedures. They must work with other first-year advisors, the College of Engineering Undergraduate Administrative Council, and other campus partners. The LA also helps address retention issues specific to academically at-risk student populations, especially underrepresented minorities, females, transfer students, first generation, and non-traditional students. Each year the LA helps assess, evaluate, and continuously improve student learning, advising, academic support programs, and other aspects of the first-year experience using data, lessons learned, and input from key stakeholders.
The LA maintains knowledge of general education and academic program requirements, progression policies, SACS and ABET accreditation requirements, and university regulations.
