Under the supervision of the Manager for the Teaching & Learning Center, WRIT Center, and Testing Center, Learning Consultants provide direct and indirect learning support for students online, at Delta College main campus, or any of the College's Downtown Centers. They also engage in other appropriate activities that support their role, the department, or the institution.
This is FT Position (40 hours/week and 52 weeks/year); however, scheduling flexibility is required to meet student needs (particularly on evenings/weekends during the fall and winter semesters).
NOTE: This particular Learning Consultant position requires content-area expertise in at least TWO of the following subject areas upon hire, with the openness to continue expanding content-knowledge in other areas: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science (including programming), Health Sciences, Math, AND/OR Physics, with the ability to integrate effective learning, study, and test-taking strategies into sessions.
Direct Learning Support Responsibilities
Meet with individual students in a variety of ways (in-person, online, by phone/email, etc.) to support their understanding of specific content-areas and gain familiarity with/confidence in disciplinary thinking. Assist students in developing learning, study, test-taking, and metacognitive strategies which contribute to academic/professional success.
Facilitate study groups, review sessions, and/or workshops that promote peer-to-peer interactions, guide students' approaches to problem-solving and application of class material, and/or assist with the metacognitive skill development necessary for college success.
Serve as class-embedded learning support (e.g., SLA) as needed (online and/or at Delta College main campus or any of its learning centers).
Support students who have received academic referrals for content-area assistance; learning, study, and test-taking strategies; or technology support through encouraging outreach, personalized interventions, and timely follow-through communications.
Indirect Learning Support Responsibilities
Model a commitment to lifelong learning and demonstrate personal, academic, and professional growth.
Participate in professional development activities to continue expanding content knowledge (including in additional courses/disciplines), build communication skills, enhance application of learning & study strategies, and improve service to diverse populations.
Develop professional development/training resources (including workshops) for student employees and/or other learning consultants.
Create and/or deliver educational materials (e.g., handouts, videos, resource lists, etc.) that support student learning, success, and retention.
Position Support Responsibilities
Assess student learning and preparedness within sessions and contribute to departmental assessment efforts that determine the impact of services.
Schedule student appointments, engage in student outreach, and document learning support sessions appropriately within the TracCloud system.
Publicize learning support services and programming through continuous relationship-building and outreach to faculty.
Actively participate in departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings as required.
Refer students to other campus departments, services, and resources (as appropriate).
Follow up on telephone, email, and other inquiries as needed.
Other relevant duties as assigned or upon supervisor request.

Associate's Degree OR equivalent knowledge/skills
Coursework or expertise in at least TWO of the following subject areas upon hire, with the openness to continue expanding content-knowledge in other areas: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science (including programming), Health Sciences, Math, AND/OR Physics.
A broad understanding of effective learning, study, and test-taking strategies for academic success.
At least one year of relatable experience in facilitating adult college-level learning environments.
Strong interpersonal communication and collaboration skills in order to further departmental goals.
Openness to initial training and enthusiasm for/commitment to ongoing professional development.
Additional Experiences Considered:
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent knowledge/skills with extensive coursework or expertise in at least TWO following subject areas upon hire, with the openness to continue expanding content-knowledge in other areas: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science (including programming), Health Sciences, Math, AND/OR Physics.
Familiarity with educational research, student development theory, and best practices in tutoring or learning assistance.
Additional years of experience in adult learning theory, tutoring, or teaching.
