Reporting to the associate dean for the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences' Advanced Academic Programs division, we are seeking a Director for Student Affairs - AAP who will lead and serve the non-academic student life needs for students enrolled in professional graduate-level programs at the Washington, D.C., Center, the Homewood campus in Baltimore, Maryland, and online. Each semester, AAP enrolls over 4,800 part- and full-time students. The successful candidate will work directly with faculty, students, staff, and outside stakeholders to respond when concerns arise and to actively work to improve systems and policies that support the well-being of AAP students.
The Director of Student Affairs will collaborate with the following offices and student affairs partners to ensure that university and divisional student affairs policies and processes meet graduate student needs in both the online and on-ground environments:

The director leads a student-centered, high-functioning, fast-paced, and collaborative team. This position is vital to student development and success.
This is a hybrid position with travel between the Washington, D.C., location and the Homewood campus.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The director is responsible (directly or indirectly with partner offices) for student welfare and behavioral concerns to ensure that students receive support and guidance, professional mentorship, career development, and other services as needed and that students remain compliant with the policies and procedures of the university.
The executive director develops and monitors a student affairs budget in collaboration with the KSAS Finance office and strategizes staffing levels to meet unit needs and to improve the student experience.
Supervision
The director leads the student affairs team, which comprises one associate director of student affairs, the director of student success, two student success advisers, and one student coordinator.
Crisis response
Escalates crisis issues to the associate dean and other JHU crisis management partners as appropriate.
Serves as a member of the on-call leadership team, managing the appropriate institutional response to campus emergencies.
Programming & Student Organizations
Facilitates discussions, initiatives, and school activities that enhance student life and build community.
Coordinates and initiates programming that enhances the student experience and students' personal development, increases student retention, and responds to student needs.
Partners with admissions, academic affairs, and AAP events staff to plan and implement student orientations, as appropriate.
Supports the development of graduate student organizations, sets and revises policies in concert with the university, and advises on administration of budgets (including fundraising) and activity planning.
Advocates for professional development and career readiness initiatives in close partnership with the Office of Life Design. Shares a dual-supervisory role with the JHU Office of Life Design's associate director of integrative learning and life design.
Coordinates student assignments on related student affairs committees.
Ensures that divisional student affairs policies and practices comply with government regulations and university policies impacting students, and that mandates and requirements are met.
Constructs and conducts surveys, needs assessments, and evaluations of student needs (basic needs surveys, climate surveys, alumni first destination surveys, etc.), and summarizes the data for review with school and university leadership for decision making and follow-up, with support and partnership from the KSAS and JHU Institutional Research offices and the university and KSAS Diversity and Inclusion offices.
Oversees student affairs data strategies to track student issues, needs, and trends to advocate for resources and policies and to identify points of intersection and action that will align with relevant retention and recruitment goals.
Training & Education
Trains/coordinates training for divisional academic staff and faculty around issues related to student affairs.
Leads regularly scheduled meetings with academic program staff to enhance communication.
Partners with the Office of Student Conduct to maintain standards for student behavior, recommends disciplinary actions as necessary, and documents all student failures to comply with established policy and procedures.
Attends national and local student affairs and other professional conferences to advance professional skills and services.
Performs other duties as necessary for the administration.

Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential records and information.
Highly skilled in building and leading diverse teams.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree in higher education administration, education, student affairs, business or related field.
Minimum of seven years progressive experience in student services/affairs or directly related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience working with graduate students.
Previous experience working in academic settings with diverse student populations in terms of race, ethnicity, country of origin, etc.
Previous experience managing and supervising extensive staff.
Experience working in student affairs with adult learners.
Experience working with online learners.
