Position Summary:
Under direction provides advanced and professional advice to international students and academic departments on immigration regulations and university policies to ensure compliance. Advises students on a variety of matters including; immigration rules and regulations, adjustment and transition. Responsible for accurate reporting and record-keeping in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System. Participates in planning, development and delivery of programs; including orientation and outreach, immigration workshops and trainings. Represents the university as a Designated School Official (DSO) for F-1 students and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the University's J-1 Exchange Visitor Program for students in its obligations to comply with all US immigration and labor regulations governing international students in the United States. Interpret US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Department of State (DOS) regulations. Communicate directly with representatives of U.S. government agencies domestically and abroad as appropriate.
Using skills as a seasoned, experienced student services professional, provides the full range of student services within an organization such as an academic department, school, or college. Independently advises students and resolves student services-related issues on the full range of academic issues inherent within the organization. Advises faculty and management on a variety of student issues. Works with the department's / school's / college's management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures. Guidance on issues requiring in-depth knowledge of specialized programs is provided by offices specializing in those fields, e.g., the financial aid office, graduate division, or student learning center, OR by the chair / dean and faculty of the department / school / college. May administer funds for student programs.

$53,400.00 - $94,000.00 (Annual Salary)
Required:
5 years working with international students or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques to advise international students and academic units; and knowledge of academic culture at a large research university. Solid verbal and written communication skills. Including ability to write, edit with strong attention to detail Interpersonal skills. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Ability to explain complex information to individuals with limited English skills. Knowledge of complex federal regulations pertaining to U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance issues, and employment eligibility / authorization for international students and scholars. Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance. Demonstrated experience with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and government reporting requirements. Demonstrated skills to develop and implement training and information workshops and services to international students and department staff. Ability to mediate problems and handle sensitive issues that require tact and confidentiality. Demonstrated counseling skills to problem solve, and respond appropriately to student concerns and make appropriate referrals.
Preferred:
Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs with working knowledge of spreadsheets, database and desktop publication software; and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
