With 18 departments and five centers spanning the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the largest of NIU's six undergraduate colleges. The Department of Mathematical Science is a vibrant, dynamic department that helps students understand our world. By studying mathematics, students not only gain an understanding of complex mathematical structures and algorithms, they also sharpen skills that are useful in a variety of careers. Mathematical Science programs help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to quickly learn technical and abstract material.
Position Summary:
The duties performed by the person in this position will be assigned primarily by the Assistant Chair. Additional duties may be assigned by the Department's Office Administrator or by the Chair. This position also keeps track of class schedules, records, and equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Departmental Support
Develop and maintain departmental records having to do with enrollments and faculty teaching assignments
Maintains record of all syllabi and final exams for each semester.
Assist in the development of the Final Exam Schedule including the assigning of rooms and proctors for all sections involved in the Department's mass finals.
Prepares copies of exams, quizzes, homework, and syllabi for the undergraduate and graduate courses offered in the department.
Prepare and distribute Student Evaluation of Teaching packets. Process the completed evaluations in a confidential manner.
Academic Program Support
Provide department class schedule information to students and departmental staff , with the aid of NIU registration systems and the Illinois Articulation Protocols.
Register undergraduate/graduate students into math classes, checking prerequisites before completing registration.
Monitor class enrollments and adjusts course capacity when needed and instructed to by the assistant chair.
Administrative Support
Maintains calendar for Assistant Chair.
Maintains and initiates correspondence on behalf of the assistant chair regarding student placement.
Types correspondence for chair and faculty using pc-based software
Assist in directing phone calls and receiving visitors
Track and maintain listing of departmental equipment.
Track and maintain listing of departmental key assignments
