The New Student and Transition Programs (NSTP) office supports first-year and transfer students and their families as they transition into the Ithaca College community. The Orientation Assistantplays a crucial role within NSTP, working alongside professional and student staff members to assist with the development, coordination, and implementation of inclusive services and programs, primarily Fall Orientations.The work environment is collaborative, engaging, supportive, and fun. You will serve as an integral part of the orientation team supervised directly by the Assistant Director of New Student and Transition Programs. The team will consist of a tiered student staff structure of roughly 50-60Orientation Leaders, 6-10Orientation Mentors, and the NSTP professional staff.??
You will gain invaluable transferable skills in the areas of planning, organization, marketing and promotions, customer service, and program development. Ongoing training and support are provided to staff members through office retreats, staff meetings, and supervision.?
IC Orientation Assistant Description:??
The Orientation Assistant will collaborate to manage the major job components outlined below. Before this work begins, we will discuss opportunities for professional development in other areas of the orientation program.????

Coordinate the logistics of particular events and aspects of the orientation program, including developing engaging programming ideas, planning event particulars, and creating the student staff work schedule for orientation.

Serve as a liaison to campus partners in the orientation and OL training planning process via regular email, MS Teams, and phone communications.

Assist in the supervision of student staff, with a strong focus on team building, reflection opportunities, and developing individual goals.

Assist in the creation and execution of comprehensive training programs for Orientation Mentors and Orientation Leaders.

Help implement all aspects of the Fall Orientation program, providing leadership and support on the front and back ends. Serve on the professional staff schedule/event rotation during orientation sessions.

Conduct all work through a lens of maximizing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging for all constituents.

Meet with professional staff regularly to brainstorm ideas and creatively address issues that arise throughout orientation.
The Orientation Intern will also be asked to participate in a post-orientation reflection and review process. This may include meeting with the professional team to collect group feedback, submitting a summary report, and/or having a final reflection meeting with the Assistant Director. Feedback and any reflective elements will be used to improve our orientation programs and the experience for future assistants and interns.

Qualifications and Expectations:?
Interested candidates should have completed a bachelor’s degree. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate strong attention to detail, initiative with projects, supervision of college students in a supportive environment, and the capacity to balance fun at work while maintaining a professionalism.?
We are seeking a genuine, flexible, dependable, and hardworking individual who is able to manage multiple tasks, has stamina for the long (but fun!) hours of orientation, communicates clearly, effectively works on a team, wants to facilitate student learning and development, brings a social justice lens to the educational experience, has a sense of humor, and has a sincere interest in assisting new students and their families as they transition to college.

Have completed at least two semesters of graduate school

Are currently pursuing a master's in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or a related field

Have experience working as orientation staff in higher ed
The Orientation Assistant role is a temporary position that will be compensated for at a rate of $16.00 per hour. The role is for a minimum of 30 hours per week from the end of May to the beginning of August (due to 'Summer Restoration Fridays' when the College is closed). In early August, regular work hours will resume at 37.5 hours per week. Overtime hours can be expected during OL Training and Fall Orientation days in August. (Summer hours can go up to 37.5 hours per week dependent upon candidate availability and any applicable requirements through a graduate school program.) The Orientation Assistant will start on (or around) Monday, May 23. You are expected to work in-person through the Orientation program ending their role on Tuesday, August 22 (there is some flexibility on a day before/day after). Living on campus is a requirement of the position. As a result, this position will be provided with an on-campus apartment with a kitchen, bathroom, and living space with parking, laundry, fitness center access and more included. Interns will also have meals covered during student leader training, the orientation programs, and select meetings throughout the summer.??
Ithaca College (IC) is a private, 4-year residential institution with a blend of liberal arts and professional programs.?We will be hosting a Fall Orientation for incoming students and their families, with occasional summer webinars for students and families.?Students will move into their fall housing assignment, then proceed to an orientation program, leading students into their first day of classes.
