The Resident Director (RD) position provides support and leadership for building positive, vibrant communities on campus. The RD provides training and guidance to Residential Life student staff, is regularly present at campus events, and is available for informal discussion with students. The primary duty of the RD is to serve as an on-call crisis response team member in collaboration with Residential Life staff. Through a rotating on-call schedule, the RD responds with student staff, Campus Safety and Security, and others to student behavioral concerns or to facilities issues. The RD provides a professional staff evaluation of the scene, helps ensure student safety, de-escalates if necessary, and serves as a coordination point for mobilization of other staff teams. Common issues the RD might respond to include (but are not limited to): noise complaints, underage or excessive alcohol consumption, illegal drug use, fire alarms, facilities issues (such as flooding, leaking pipes, broken windows or doors, malfunctioning smoke detectors), and mental health concerns. The RD operates within the student-centered and growth-oriented (not punitive) philosophy of Residential Life.
