DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Department of Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology (MCD) is comprised of thirty-two faculty members and four lecturers, whose work focuses on questions of how information in DNA is packaged, read, and interpreted in living cells, how those cells are built and regenerated, and how cells work together to comprise a whole organism.
Under general supervision of the MCD Biology Department Manager and Department Chair, the Assistant Department Manager is responsible for assistance with curriculum management, department planning and program support, oversight of the graduate and undergraduate programs and processing various staff and non senate academic personnel actions.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $80,000 - $85,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience. JOB DUTIES
30% - Department Planning and Support
Serves as back up to the department manager and completes projects as assigned in management of the department, including operations, budget and fiscal activities, student services, space and facilities, and program and curricular implementation, with particular focus on curriculum and advising programs.
Oversees outreach efforts (e.g. alumni relations, public relations, student recruitment, department fundraising), special events, and departmental publicity. Oversees maintenance and updates of department website as it pertains to outreach.
Helps facilitate the vision and strategies of the department to staff, building consensus and plays a key role in change management.
30% - Curriculum Coordination and Student Support
Runs reports, analyzes curriculum, works closely with Curriculum Committee Chair for curriculum enrollment management; facilitates quarterly TA placements.
Helps coordinate yearly events for graduate recruitment.
Plans a yearly research conference involving other departments.
Oversees maintenance and updating of advising portion of department website.
30% - Personnel/Recruitment
Serves as a resource to the department by providing academic personnel policy and procedural information to the chair, faculty and researchers.
Plans and directly supports chair in all non-Senate and graduate student academic personnel matters, assuring the completeness and accuracy of records.
Ensures adherence to Affirmative Action and other established policy and procedures in the areas of recruitment, appointments, research, temporary teaching and postdoctoral recruitments, merit and promotion cases.
Serves as liaison between the department and the Dean's Office, Campus Academic Human Resources and personnel committees.
10% - Other Functional Areas and Special Projects

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience and / or training.
Interpersonal skills including active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills.
Strong verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to assimilate and interpret administrative policies and procedures, and apply them with consistency to individual circumstances.
Demonstrated leadership experience with strong skills in short-term planning, analysis, problem-solving, and customer service with the ability to effectively manage change and to meet deadlines, often with frequent interruptions.
Demonstrated ability to use discretion, exercise confidentiality, flexibility and good judgment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Thorough knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures including UC academic and staff personnel policies and procedures.
Experience working in an academic setting with knowledge of university programs, policies and procedures related to budget, personnel, students and curriculum.
Experience with common University-specific computer application programs and systems (i.e., AIS, Infoview, Coursedog, CAT, Slate, CruzBuy, CruzPay, UC Recruit, DivData and WCMS), and the willingness and ability to learn new systems in a highly technical environment.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
Will be required to work a hybrid work schedule, days of the week and number of days to be determined, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
