Departmental Overview
The College of Engineering (COE) at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three Engineering colleges in the United States. With more than 250 regular faculty members, 1, 800 graduate students and 3,200 undergraduate students located in seven academic departments, Engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus.
The Industrial Engineering and Operations Research Department (IEOR) is an academic department within the College of Engineering (COE). IEOR is home to 15 core faculty, 6 emeriti, and 4-5 lecturers. The department offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees; as well as two professional master's programs - Master's of Engineering (MEng) in IEOR and Master's of Analytics. IEOR is at the forefront of research and teaching of operations research and analytics methods, as well as the advancement of quantitative methodologies to solve problems in the areas of healthcare, supply chains, energy, security, finance, and e-commerce. The department has strong ties with other departments in the UC Berkeley College of Engineering and enjoys close relationships with the departments of Statistics, Mathematics, and Economics, as well as with the Haas School of Business.
The IEOR department launched the Master of Analytics degree program in August 2021, the inaugural cohort matriculated Fall 2022, and is headquartered at UC Berkeley's Industrial Engineering and Operations Research department (IEOR). Our mission is to train professionals in the analytical tools for data-driven decision making to address complex business challenges across industries ranging from e-commerce to healthcare, from energy to transportation. These challenges relate to the design, analysis, and efficient management of systems involving supply chains, energy, human resources, pricing, capacity planning, financing, risk management, and others.
This position (Career Services Officer) will support the new Berkeley IEOR Master of Analytics Degree, which is a one year program. The first cohort of 74 students will graduate in Spring 2023. The cohort size is expected to grow until a steady state of 150 is achieved. The Career Services Officer is charged with creating, implementing and managing a career development and placement program for students of the new Master of Analytics professional degree. Collaborating closely with the Faculty Director, the campus Career Center, industry/organizational partners, and other resources the Career Services Officer will establish scalable programs and services to advise students and alumni on career issues and strategies, job search methods, resume preparation, placement options, and related matters. This position will work with the Faculty Director, College Relations, alumni, industry partners and others to establish and manage relationships with potential employers. The Career Services Officer will also plan and implement activities to create and sustain relationships with the range of constituencies needed for a successful career planning and placement program. This position involves planning, developing, and implementing programs, activities, events, counseling, and advising focused on students' and alumni career development. Works with students, alumni, and potential employers.
The Career Services Officer will report to the Department Manager as part of a team of 8 working on telling the story of the department and its programs. At IEOR, we commit to: Serve students first. Responsibilities
20% Counsels graduate students and alumni on career options and opportunities, including customized services. Helps students identify their interests, values, skills, and understand how these factors relate to career satisfaction and choices. Uses standard quantitative and qualitative assessments to help students assess career goals. Aids and tracks students' progress in successfully completing internships. Designs and builds both a career planning and a career placement program for graduates of the new professional Master of Analytics degree program.
20% Develops, maintains and enhances relationships with corporations and other organizations to develop internship opportunities, and promote external relations with the organization relating to career services for students and alumni. Leverages COE connections with industry, government and non-profit organizations to establish strong pool of potential employers for Master of Analytics graduates. Collaborates with faculty and department student services professionals to set-up systems and processes to capture job leads data and make it available to students. Creates set standards and protocols to ensure this resource is not mis-used.
15% Designs the annual calendar of workshops and trainings, directly plans and delivers training and builds and manages a network of outside facilitators and experts to contribute to the program.
10% Plans and executes events related to internships, career development, cohort community building, etc.
10% Conducts outreach to campus, collaboration with other Career Center units, appointment/program scheduling, and Handshake and other online resources.
5% Designs, researches, and updates editorial career educational resources, and training documents delivered to the students so we can replicate and build on the career programming in future years.
5% Helps with decision making, goal setting, action planning, and identifying internal / external obstacles to obtaining goals. Creates and manages a support plan for any students who are struggling in their career planning/internship searches or otherwise.
5% Provides guidance to departments on providing resources to meet students' career needs.
5% Assists with the development and implementation of marketing and outreach programs to promote programs and services.
5% Researches and organizes economic and employment trend data, and designs materials for presentation to students.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Strong knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling process, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.
Ability to design and modify computer applications to meet program needs, problem identification, presentation skills, verbal communication, written communication, and organization skills.
Ability to work with people from diverse cultures.
Demonstrated experience in establishing effective working relationships with a variety of partners, including staff of all levels, faculty, employers and alumni; understanding of the political acumen needed to be effective.
Advanced project management skills, including skills to plan and implement successful events.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree in related area.
Knowledge of UC programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, and employment trends.
Thorough knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice; workshop and program design.
Skill to recognize potential areas of constituency concern and address, resolve and/or mitigate problems or issues.
Advanced knowledge of employers, the labor market, and employment trends, both locally and nationally, as related to hiring students from a top-tier public university.
Experience and proficiency with incorporating the use of technology to deliver career services.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $61,600 to $84,600. This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits.
