The Design and Communications Specialist is a critical member of the Global Programs and University Life communications team, tasked with maximizing studentsâ™ understanding of, and successful participation in, the wide variety of support services, programs and events available during their college journey at NYU. By focusing on the Division of Student Affairs and student navigation and access, the work of this office enables more students to thrive at NYU. The position oversees the Division of Student Affairs web pages, developing and maintaining a strategic and engaging web presence, as well as our digital accessibility standards and best practices, ensuring that our various communication methods adhere to our values of global inclusion, diversity, belonging, equity and accessibility. The incumbent helps develop innovative solutions for effectively communicating with students spanning six continents throughout NYU's Global Network. Manage a robust student internship program, which engages current students in the creation and distribution of information and resources. Collaborating on initiatives that better the student experience using digital platforms and other methods of engagement, the incumbent partners with colleagues across student affairs and beyond to ensure the highest level of student engagement and understanding. Advance the Divisionâ™s communications strategy, including producing compelling content for various communication platforms, curating and managing various communication outlets, and generating engaging visuals for materials (such as campaigns, newsletters, presentations, memos, social media posts, flyers, maps, etc.). The incumbent also helps shape policies, procedures, and best practices regarding social media and technology.
Responsibilities
Required Education: Bachelor's Degree in marketing, communications, public affairs, or related field.
Preferred Education: Master's Degree in design, marketing, communications, journalism, or related field.
Required Experience: 3+ years of related and increasingly responsible experience, including project management, writing, marketing, print or web-design, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Relevant experience planning, implementing, and evaluating a variety of communication and marketing activities.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Good judgment, tact, diplomacy, and flexibility working across organizational lines. Strong organizational and planning skills, and impeccable attention to detail. Excellent writing and communications skills, including proofreading, generating content, and the ability to transform university jargon into clear, conversational communications. Adept at story crafting and telling; knowledge of communication theories, principles, practices and techniques. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite programs (must have advanced experience with either Photoshop or Illustrator and be proficient with InDesign) and strong graphic design skills. Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office and presentation software (Google Slides, Keynote, Powerpoint); experience using online interactive presentation platforms to build beautiful and compelling presentations. Proficiency with accessibility guidelines for web content, documents, and images. Able to approach marketing and communication challenges creatively in a high energy, complex university environment. Strong creative sense. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Strong listener and leader, who is comfortable providing constructive feedback to student interns and colleagues. Proficient with project management software (e.g., Asana, AirTable, Monday). Knowledge of technology and trends, as well as best practices for communicating to Millennial, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha populations.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of branding and marketing principles and practices. Skill in crafting targeted communications for addressing specialized needs of diverse audiences through strategic choices in language, design, and communication platforms. Familiarity with commonly used style guides. Working knowledge of mobile applications, web and social media analytics, data management, and infographics. Experience in design thinking. Familiarity with WYSIWYG web-building platforms. Change management. Familiarity with NYU and the Global Network.
Qualifications
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $58,500.00 to USD $105,000.00.
