Carnegie Mellon University's Silicon Valley campus (CMU-SV) enrolls graduate students pursuing master's degrees from programs within CMU's world-class College of Engineering. Located at the NASA Research Park near Mountain View, CMU-SV is in the heart of the Silicon Valley technology hub where nearly 12,000 Carnegie Mellon alumni live and work. While enrolled at CMU-SV, engineering students experience a growing student life, innovative classroom experience, and leverage the Silicon Valley location for their professional development.
Student Affairs at CMU-SV comprises all student services and activities outside of the traditional classroom and we are searching for an Associate Director of Student Services and Engagement. You will first and foremost serve students and student programs, including student life, new student orientation, student organizations, student resources, and student advocacy. The Associate Director of Student Services and Engagement connects students to needed resources while acting as an advocate for the student experience.
Under the direction and mentorship of the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, you are engaged with all aspects of student life and play a pivotal role in ensuring overall quality of the total student experience. You will work closely with liaisons in the departments operating at the Silicon Valley campus, as well as with other campus functions to ensure that student services are consistent and coordinated across programs. You will also engage with student service offices and other relevant functions in central administration as needed to deliver a high level of student support. You will be joining an innovative and forward-thinking student affairs team whose mission is to nurture a strong student life experience for all CMU-SV students by providing high-quality service and support.
Your core responsibilities will include:
Provide support, resources, and service to students for all non-academic related issues. These topics can include, but are not limited to: transportation, successful on and offboarding, health/wellness, and international student services.
Build and facilitate DEI trainings and programming.
Partner with departments to coordinate and complete new student orientation events and activities. Develop programming and activities for Welcome Week during the fall and spring semesters.
Plan and implement campus events for all CMU-SV students. Manage a team of student workers and the "Fun Squad" student organization to ensure that a thoughtful agenda is inclusive and accurately promoted.
Promote new student organizations and lead all non-departmental student organizations, which includes meeting with student organization leaders, helping with event planning, and providing professional development activities that improves their leadership skills.
Act as the liaison for international students in working with the Office of International Education at the Pittsburgh campus (OIE), including OIE workshops, facilitating processes with OPT and CPT (Optional Practical Training and Curricular Practical Training) and individual student issues.
Serve as an active member of the campus safety committee and, in partnership with the other committee members, ensure semester meetings and drills are held. Update information as needed for the annual Jeanne Clery report and other safety information that might be required by CMU or other authorities.
Assist in communicating important calendar targets for incoming student communications, graduating student offboarding, and key dates for applying for work authorization for F-1 and J-1 students.
Collaborate with other team members on various student affairs initiatives.
Maintain records related to student population, student participation in student life activities, use of student resources, etc.
Publish content for a regular student newsletter and apply various on-line communications channels to advise students and others in the CMU community interested in student events and activities.
Handle CMU-SV student emergency fund; in collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs decide where and how funds are to be allocated.
Run various student services such as the Student Workers (I-9) process, ID card process in collaboration with The HUB team in Pittsburgh, and the VTA and Caltrain transportation programs.
Other projects and duties may be assigned.
