JOB SUMMARY

Eastside Catholic is seeking an energetic school counselor to join our Student Services Department. The school counselor supports a subset of the school community (grades 6-12) with matters pertaining to mental health and academics and may include some college advising support. This role is performed with a collaborative team. Qualified applicants will have a school counseling background and a willingness to support students academically, socially, emotionally and with post-secondary plans.

Responsibilities

• Work with students, faculty, parents and guardians, administrators, cross-divisional student-support team and mental health professionals in the community to guide the social and emotional lives of high school students
• Support students through small group counseling and provide resources to help teach current mental health topics
• Depending on grade level assignment, may support the college application process for students regarding four-year academic planning, testing schedules and college applications and write letters of recommendation for seniors
• Present student and parent information during evening hours, as needed, to serve the entire Eastside Catholic community
• Collaborate with team members to develop interventions for individual students and the broader student body
• Work with students and families to create intervention plans for students in developmental and situational crisis
• Establish and maintain a positive and safe learning environment where students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process
• Maintain appropriate reports and records on each assigned student and protect each student’s con?dentiality

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) model
• Knowledge of the college admissions process, collegiate and federal aid practices and a familiarity with colleges and universities nationwide or a willingness to learn these skills
• Knowledge of standardized testing programs and Advanced Placement testing
• Demonstrated understanding of resiliency and environmental protective factors
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)
• A commitment to working with all students in a progressive, faith-based school
• Possess a genuine interest in working with high school students and serving their mental health needs
• Effective skills in creating positive relationships with students and their families, as well as the ability to meet the needs of a diverse and demanding student and parent population
• Strong interpersonal, collaborative and organizational skills
• Knowledge of adolescent development, social-emotional issues of students, parenting models and topics, along with a variety of counseling models and strategies
• Strong interpersonal and group skills (listening, humor, tact, intuition, confidentiality)
• Keen observation and ability to assess the needs of the school community
• Knowledgeable and skilled in addressing such issues as ADD, grief, divorce, anxiety, difficulties with self-regulation, depression, learning differences and disabilities
• Effective communication and public speaking skills
• Computer literacy, especially Microsoft Office Suite
• Familiarity with state laws regarding child abuse
• Familiarity with the available state, county and local services
• Familiarity with test batteries and needs assessments and interpreting the results of both

Required Education and Experience

• Ed. or MS in school counseling or psychology, or LCSW from an accredited college or university required
• ESA certificate or equivalent is preferred
• Experience working as a school counselor
