Position Summary

Under the direction of the Associate Director of the Office of Educational Opportunity Programs, Outreach and Success (EOPOS), the EOP Counselor is responsible for providing counseling and academic advising for EOP students regarding course selection, evaluation, adjustment from high school and/or community college, financial aid referrals, personal counseling related to self-awareness, personal growth, peer relationships, family expectations/problems, career investigation, academic probation, and residential life.

The EOP Counselor is responsible for the coordination of two student service programs (e.g., EOP BEST Summer Bridge program and SOAR Mentor Program, etc.). This includes the planning and facilitation of a five-week, residential summer program for incoming first year students, and facilitation of a peer mentoring program for incoming freshmen and transfer students which includes hiring, training, and supervising peer mentors.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The mission of the Office of Educational Opportunity Programs, Outreach & Success is to serve students from low-income backgrounds and historically underserved communities by providing innovative programs and services that facilitate the successful recruitment, retention and development of scholars and leaders as they persist toward a university degree. EOP assists students in achieving academic success and work through educational, psychological, social, and economic challenges through their college experience by providing a comprehensive program of support services. EOP also supports students who are former foster youth, wards of the court, under legal guardianship or unaccompanied youth through the Guardian Scholars Program. In addition, EOP supports undocumented students and allies.

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity is responsible for the coordination and development of student services and building the inclusive excellence of SDSU's staff and faculty at San Diego State University.

Education and Experience

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Key Qualifications

• • The equivalent of five years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience or professional experience in higher education academic support services or equivalent is preferred.
  • Master's degree in Counseling, College Student Development, Higher Education, or a directly related field is preferred.
  • Experience developing, planning, and implementing workshops or other programming aimed at supporting students, including undocumented students and former foster youth.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which assigned.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,025 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,025 - $7,159 per month.
