Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Assistant Manager for Student Basic Needs within the Offices of the Dean of Students – Off-Campus Living and Community Initiatives as part of the Division of Student Affairs. The position's responsibilities are centered on our mission to support academic and social development, as well as retention of Rutgers University students. The Assistant Manager aids students (and their families), faculty, and staff on unmet financial needs such as food and housing. The person in this role may also participate in outreach activities to help students acquire knowledge and skills which will enhance their ability to function effectively at the university and in the New Brunswick/ Piscataway community.
We are a new department unit looking for people enthusiastic about developing a powerful, justice-based organization focused on our community's needs. In order to: secure funding for a diverse student body; create a supportive ecosystem that prioritizes students; increase students' access to and utilization of all support services; and promote student equity, success, retention, and completion by removing structural and systemic barriers, this position will develop programs and collaborate with campus partners and community organizations. To do this, the role will need to be up to date on current concerns, cutting-edge tactics, accepted procedures, laws, and policies pertaining to student equity and fundamental needs.

Our department is focused on expanding our food aid programs and making sure they have access to healthy and reliable housing. We will get the chance to lay the groundwork for this new department and decide how our campus community's basic requirements will be met moving forward.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Provides direct supervision and leadership to Basic Needs Center staff, students, and others, including the coordination of assigned functions, activities, and services. This includes one professional staff member, up to 20+ student staff, and potential volunteers.
Supervises Rutgers Student Food Pantry program and related programs that address food insecurity. These programs provide community members with access to food, hygiene items, and meal swipes in the on-campus dining facilities.
Manages, supervises, supports, and coordinates the college-wide food pantry, clothing closet, financial, credit-building services, and other assigned basic needs efforts; coordinate scheduling, training, and staffing; provide work guidance in collaboration with Basic Needs Coordinator, volunteer and student workers; maintains quality control; and orders, receives, and stocks necessary items.
Responsible for recruitment, selection, hiring, orienting, training, ongoing supervision and evaluation of student pantry staff who coordinates the food pantry operations.
Develops and maintain relationships with partners inside and outside of the university to cultivate resources in support of students and to enhance the effectiveness of referrals.
Provides individualized case management support for a caseload of students.
Conducts initial intake meetings with students to assess needs for appropriate referrals
Provides case management consultation to faculty, staff, parents, and guardians related to their questions about resources for basic needs support and student success.
Provides mental health outreach programming to the community related to topics such as suicide prevention and making effective referrals (i.e., gatekeeper training).
Supervises students and develops action plans to facilitate referrals to on and off-campus resources.
Develops/leads programs, trainings, and workshops for faculty, staff, and students that support integrated student development and success.
Applies Qualtrics, campus assessment tools, standard data acquisition methodologies/ other related assessment tools.
Works collaboratively with the Assistant Dean to write/report on outcomes/data to campus partners, donors, alumni, and the Student Affairs Assessment Team.
Monitors/reviews programs, use standard processes/information to improve/further develop existing programs and services.
Participates in professional development workshops, conferences, construct learning objectives/assessment measures for programs.
Manages student information systems, statistical data interpretation, and the application of information technology to success/retention/completion programs
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree preferably in human services, sociology, political science, business, higher education administration or a related field.
Minimum of two years of related experience.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Most physical demands are consistent with a typical desk-type position requiring daily use of a computer display/terminal as well as some on- and off-campus commuting periodically, engaging in collaborative work around campus necessitating increased movement. However, the Assistant Manager may infrequently be called on to procure items from the Community Food Bank or local grocery stores when other staff are not available. This involves repetitively grasping and lifting food items that may way up to 40 pounds, loading these into a vehicle, and then unloading the items into the pantry.
Special Conditions:
Must hold a valid driver's license with a clean driving record and be willing to operate a passenger van on occasion.
Clean driving record.
Work in excess of 40 hours a week at times.
Ability to accommodate evening and weekend work as needed.
