The Sustainability Outreach Specialist (SOS) is expected to provide communications resources for every campus, college, and unit at ECU with regard to sustainability news, events and opportunities, and work to fulfill ECU`s goal of integrating sustainability across the university's core functions of education, research, outreach and operations, and across eastern North Carolina. The SOS will be responsible for developing a comprehensive communication plan with strategies across all platforms including social media, website, YouTube Channel, e-newsletter, event promotion, printed medium, reports and interactions with news media to deliver sustainability-focused messages and communication to both internal and external audiences in compliance with University guidelines and policies. The SOS will collaborate with students, staff, and faculty in Campus Operations, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, University Advancement, REDE Division, News Services, campus committees and external partners to enhance ECU's reputation as a sustainability leader in higher education and to enhance visibility of the Sustainability Program with internal and external stakeholders.
Specific duties and responsibilities of this position will include coordination of the following programs: Guest Lectures, Green Office Program, Greek Life Initiatives, Game Day Recycling Challenge, RecycleMania Competition, Green Holidays Activities, STARS Data Collection and Reporting, and Annual Progress Reports and Infographics.
The SOS will also be responsible for planning, promoting, and recruiting student assistance with the following events: Town Creek Culvert Litter Cleanups (monthly), Otter Creek Natural Area Trail Maintenance (monthly), Greenville Community Garden and Orchard Workdays (monthly), Sustainability Film and Discussion Series (monthly), Get A Clue Involvement Fair (September), Campus Sustainability Day (October), Homecoming Involvement Fair (October), Polar Plunge Involvement Fair (November), America Recycles Day (November), Employee Appreciation Week (April), Earth Week (April), Barefoot on the Mall (April), New Student Orientation Fairs (summer), and on and off campus stakeholder collaboration, volunteer recruitment, and student group advising. The Sustainability Outreach Specialist will report directly to the University Sustainability Manager (USM).
The employee should be proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of applications (Word, Excel, Power Point, Teams, Outlook, etc.). Additionally, they should be proficient with social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat, YouTube, Tik Tok), content management software (e.g. LinkTree, Later), email marketing campaigns (e.g., MailChimp, Constant Contact), and graphics design applications (e.g. Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe InDesign, Canva, etc.).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, comfort in presenting to large crowds and speaking on camera, and demonstrating the ability to work with individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner is necessary for this position.
Work requires strong analytical and organizational skills; an ability to self-motivate, multi-task, and work in a fast-paced environment; experience in leading planning efforts with various stakeholders and building consensus in a large institutional setting.
