The Middle School Dean is responsible for the overall well being of a grade level both in terms of individual student success and the whole class community. The ideal candidate brings strong leadership, conflict resolution skills, cultural competency, and the ability and willingness to collaborate with the goal of building a strong class community alongside individual student growth. The Dean oversees the grade-level advisory team and program in partnership with the class chair, collaborates with the other grade-level deans and student support team, and reports to the Head of Middle School. The Dean is responsible for managing discipline, partnering with families to support individual student needs, nurturing a strong grade-level team, and supporting the School’s Mission.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Monitors student academic progress and leads academic status interventions in partnership with families, faculty, and students.
Leads grade-level advisory team in collaboration with the class chair.
Implements the student Code of Conduct, oversees disciplinary consequences, and maintains records and communications.
Attends and contributes to Dean Team and Student Support Committee meetings in support of student development, community building, and overall Middle School life.
Attends and contributes to Middle School Academic Team meetings in collaboration with JK-12 Department Chairs to develop and support institutional academic initiatives and policies.
Collaborates closely with the advisor, counselor, and learning specialist to support student academic and emotional needs.
Keeps the Head of Middle School informed of student issues and other relevant matters pertaining to student life.
Partners with the Dean Team and Student Support Team to ensure students’ appropriate academic and advisory placement and transition to the next grade level.
Organizes grade-level supervisory duties.
Monitors student attendance and communicates with families as needed.
Manages and oversees the new student orientation process.
Participates in grade level admission committees.
Attends relevant MICDS functions and serves as a general ambassador of the School.
Works with Parent Class Chairs to coordinate class events.
Teaches two courses.
Manages projects and responsibilities as needed.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor degree in subject matter required and Masters preferred.
Exceptional leadership skills to work with and lead a team; administrative experience preferred.
Ability to work in an environment that embraces a diverse community of students, educators, parents, and alums.
Experience working in a one-to-one laptop environment or relevant technology skills.
Exceptional verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
Must enjoy working and learning with children.
OTHER INFORMATION
Three additional weeks of administrative duty beyond the teaching calendar.
A criminal history and background check is required and must be successfully completed prior to employment.
May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
Work primarily in a traditional, climate-controlled classroom environment.
Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
