Job Description: Seattle Prep is hiring a full-time College Counselor for the 2023-2024 school year.
College Counselors at Seattle Prep provide individual and group guidance focusing on academic, personal and career areas of development as they relate to post-secondary opportunities. They work closely and collaboratively with the members of the School Counseling department to provide comprehensive services for all students. Seattle Prep’s College Counselors help students develop individualized plans to fully achieve the characteristics of the “Grad at Grad.” They are active in the Jesuit High School College Counselor Association (JHSCCA), the National Association of College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and the Pacific Northwest Association of College Admission Counseling (PNACAC).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Manages a caseload of 190-200 juniors and seniors. • Counsels students and their families, individually and in groups, regarding college search, application, and admission procedures. Guides families through financial aid and college selection processes. • Composes thoughtful, compelling, and data-informed letters of recommendation and facilitates timely submission of letters of recommendation and reports for college applicants. • Assists the Director of College Counseling in updating the school profile and college counseling budget. • Remains current on trends in college admissions and financial aid; represents the school at relevant state and national conferences and workshops; participates in visits to colleges and hosts over 100 college representatives on campus. • Maintains communication with and knowledge of relevant colleges. • Supports an informative, up-to-date, inclusive and welcoming college center on campus. • Embraces working with students from diverse, underserved and marginalized populations. • Monitors students’ application progress and maintains records and outcome statistics utilizing Scoir, Slate, college admission portals and other online services. • Coordinates with students’ school counselors to ensure best possible college outcomes for students and families including, but not limited to, course selection and special academic concerns. • Supports the mission of the school by engaging in non-contract required student activities. • Upholds values / policies as identified by the NACAC Guide to Ethical Practice in College Admission. • Meets the highest standards of professionalism, collegiality, and personal conduct. • Adheres to best practices and mandated standards for high school counselors and complies with conditions as stated in the Employee Handbook and Terms and Conditions of Employment.
Minimum Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree • Three years’ transferrable experience demonstrating a high level of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills • Exemplary interpersonal and relational skills; collaborative and team-oriented • Experience using presentation and database software and adept at learning multiple college counseling research and application platforms • Knowledge of colleges/universities nationwide: academic programs, testing and admission policies, major and program requirements, and financial aid/scholarship policies and procedures. • Supportive of the mission of a Catholic, Jesuit high school and formation of the whole person.
Preferred Qualifications: • Membership in National Association of College Admission Counselors • Membership in professional counseling organization (American School Counselors Association, American Counseling Association, or equivalent) • Prior experience in university admissions or financial aid • Prior experience in diverse working community • Experience in a Catholic or Jesuit institution • Master’s Degree preferred
Other Details: • Terms of Employment: This full-time contract generally begins in August 2023. • Reporting: Reports to the Director of College Counseling and Assistant Principal for Academics. • Job Classification: This position is classified as full-time instructional staff (faculty). It is exempt-not overtime eligible under the FSLA and WMWA. • Salary Range: $66,000-$118,000 annually.
