The mission of The Shriver Center is to bridge campus and community to address critical social challenges through engaged scholarship and applied learning. The Shriver Center has developed highly regarded and effective applied learning programs that meet the needs of numerous stakeholders, including UMBC students, staff, faculty and community partners. Partners include P-14 schools, non-profits and government agencies.
The Service-Learning & Community Engagement (SLCE) team instructs the 096 Community Service & Learning Practicum as a strategy to strengthen UMBC’s community engagement capacity. SLCE staff secure, coordinate and monitor approximately 800+ placements for UMBC undergraduate and graduate students each year. These experiences will deepen their personal, professional and academic development through teamwork, critical thinking, leadership, communication and social responsibility.
Position Overview:
The Assistant Director for Applied Learning & Community Engagement, who will focus on leadership, social justice and community building, leads the SLCE staff in the day-to-day operations of the SLCE program and works with stakeholders to promote this work in both the UMBC community and region.

Oversee the daily operations and administration of The Shriver Center’s Service-Learning & Community Engagement (SLCE) initiatives to support the 096 Community Service & Learning Practicum.
Supervise and support staff, student Coordinators and interns. This includes, but is not limited to, planning and setting objectives, organization and work allocation, staffing, leadership and motivation and performance management reviews and development.
Serve as primary liaison for the SLCE team and on behalf of The Shriver Center to campus partners (e.g. Registrar’s Office, Student Life, Residential Life, Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, Athletics, Admissions) to ensure strong working relationships that maximize the UMBC student experience. Collaborate with other Shriver Center initiatives to further the Center's mission. Connect with stakeholders to promote opportunities and share successes, which deepen UMBC’s recruitment and retention efforts and broaden future collaborations.
Demonstrate values, principles and practices that align with The Shriver Center’s Partnership Guide, which assists in decision-making and actions to develop true partnerships with authenticity and reciprocity. Engage in UMBC's work as a Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Campus Center.
Oversee enrollment and learning management systems and work with stakeholders to identify, create and utilize evaluation tools Applied Learning experiences.
