The Director of Student Athlete Support Services manages the the day-to-day and long-range operations, development, and programming of a multifaceted Student-Athlete Support Center and oversees all SASS programs that support retention and graduation. In addition, the Director will provide direct advising services to student-athletes for assigned teams and must be qualified to do the following:
Provide personal advising/counseling on issues ranging from academic requirements to personal matters affecting the university experience.
Work with student-athletes on strategies to enhance their success at and eventual graduation from the university, including major selection, co-op assistance, and career counseling.
Assist with development of programs aimed at improving retention and graduation rates for student athletes.
Conduct workshops for new student orientation.
Assist the coordination of the SASS Study Hall, Mentor and Tutoring programs, workshops
Work as an academic mentor to student-athletes who are deemed to be at-risk by SASS.
Work closely with the Sr. Director in matters related to academic/athletic eligibility.
Manage change as necessary and administer and ensure compliance with university policies and procedures.
Oversees the planning, development and implementation of strategies conducive to the academic, athletic, and personal development of the student-athletes at Northeastern University.
Responsibilities:
Provide academic advising and counseling and other support services to 3-4 assigned varsity teams.
Serve as NCAA Continuing Eligibility Certification Officer
Actively utilize data that is collected regarding student athlete participation in SASS program, use of introduced tools and strategies, preferences for usage of tools and strategies and overall satisfaction of programming.
Serve as an Academic Success Coach for 20+ at-risk student-athletes from various varsity teams.
Provide direct leadership to Assistant Director and Athletic Academic Support Specialists.
Qualifications:
Master's degree required
Academic background in Psychology, Sport Psychology, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, College Student Development, Education and/or Athletic Counseling preferred
Knowledge of academic guidance counseling - active listening skills, complex problem solving, deductive and inductive reasoning, etc.
Demonstrated ability to motivate student-athletes to academically achieve
Demonstrated leadership and management skills
Strong written, oral communication and expression
Computer skills, proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel required; knowledge of Banner, DARS, Salesforce, ACS preferred
Strong organizational skills and knowledge of operational procedures at the university level.
Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations
6-8 years of academic support, counseling and development of programs for student-athletes required; preferably at the Division 1 level
Evening and weekend hours may be required
