Position overview Position title: Stevenson College 1 Pre-six Lecturer Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The annual salary range for this position is $64,329 - $109,516 (based on salary points 1-19). A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach a five-credit course is $8,041 - $13,690. Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from courses taught during the academic year (see Summer Session Faculty and Lecturer Pay).
Percent time: Variable, based on the course load assigned.
Anticipated start: Appointments are contingent on the hiring units instructional need and the availability of funding. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments beginning in spring quarter 2023 through spring quarter 2024. Initial appointments made after this period must be made through other recruitments.
Position duration: Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters), but they may also be made during Summer Session.

Stevenson College at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers to teach sections of Stevenson College 1, the first course of UCSCs Academic Literacy Curriculum. College 1 is a required core course designed to help students develop academic and civic proficiency in reading and critical thinking. Students will develop understanding of academic ethos and habits of mind and practice that are tied to a sense of belonging and academic success. This course prepares students for success in other UCSC courses. There is no placement exam for College 1; enrollment in this course is not tracked by proficiency in reading, writing, or critical thinking.
Instructors meet with a seminar of about thirty students two or three times per week and present material from an established syllabus; assign and evaluate student work; meet with students in small groups; prepare grades, which may include narrative evaluations of student performance; hold weekly office hours; and carry out other typical instructional duties.
Stevenson College 1 explores questions about society and the individual. Is there a human nature? Does 'civilization' constrain or enhance that nature? What role should religion play in a society? How do we find (or create) meaning? What counts as a good argument for or against any particular view of the relationship between the individual and society? The course challenges and expands a student's perspective on 'self' and 'society' and the interactions between the two by drawing upon texts that have shaped and questioned what selves and societies ought to be. Readings include religious writings, philosophy, political theory, social criticism, as well as autobiography.
Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:
Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree).
Demonstrated record of working effectively with students from a wide range of social, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
Familiarity with current theory and research in critical and analytical reading.
Familiarity with current theory and research in philosophy, political theory, religious writings, social criticism, and/or autobiography.
A minimum of two years experience teaching critical and analytical reading, thinking and/or writing at a four-year college or university.
Internal candidates will be given priority consideration.
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
M.A/M.S.; or a B.A./B.S. degree and completion of at least one year of a Ph.D. program; or a B.A./B.S. degree and at least two years teaching experience at the college level. Equivalent foreign degrees will be considered.
Experience teaching critical and analytical reading, thinking, and/or writing at the college level.
