Responsibilities The Education Librarian has primary responsibility for supporting the research, information, collection, and instructional needs of the Kalmanovitz School of Education (KSOE) faculty and students and other departments as assigned. KSOE offers graduate programs awarding master's degrees, certificates, and an Ed.D. The incumbent will also provide general reference and instructional services, serve on Library and College committees, and assume other duties as needed. Reports to the Head of Teaching and Research Services.
JOB DESCRIPTION 1. Information Literacy Instruction (35%) - Teaches information literacy sessions for the graduate-level programs of the Kalmanovitz School of Education and other School of Liberal Arts departments as assigned, meeting the campus-wide and department specific student learning outcomes - Develops research guides and tutorials related to subjects in the School - As time permits, contributes to the team of librarians covering information literacy instruction in the undergraduate composition program 2. Collection Development (20%) - Serves as Subject Selector and actively works with faculty departmental liaisons to develop priorities for selection of digital and print materials, maintaining an appropriate collection of books, journals, databases, media and related resources - Manages the development, policy, and procedures for the Children's Literature collection - Provides Library Resource and Information Literacy reviews for proposed new courses, programs, and program reviews within assigned discipline areas 3. Reference (25%) - Provides research advice and assistance in person and online to all SMC students, faculty, and staff and non-SMC users (5+ hours per week at the reference desk, average of 2-4 hours per week answering emails and conducting reference consultations with KSOE students and faculty) - Maintains in-depth knowledge of information sources relevant to assigned subject areas and works with faculty to stay abreast of the curriculum and assist students in successfully completing research assignments 4. Scholarly Communications (5%) - Supports the library's open access/open educational resources initiatives - Assists faculty in KSOE and other assigned departments with keeping their scholar profiles and works in Digital Commons up to date 5. Campus and Professional Contributions (10%) - Actively seeks out and participates in events and opportunities to communicate the Library's collections and services - Coordinates annual workshop for local high school librarians - Serves on library and college committees as assigned - Contributes to the profession through involvement in professional organizations, conference presentations, research and/or publications 6. Other duties as assigned (5%)
Experience and Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS: Education: REQUIRED: MLS or equivalent from ALA accredited program. PREFERRED: A degree, coursework, or professional experience in one or more of the subjects served by this position. Experience: - Demonstrated knowledge of library services for an academic environment. Preferred: demonstrated, successful experience working in an academic library providing services for students and faculty. - Preferred: Demonstrated, successful experience delivering quality instruction and reference/research service in a student-centered environment. - Preferred: Demonstrated, successful experience producing subject-specialized learning objects, tutorials, and webpages, using a variety of tools. - Preferred: Experience establishing and assessing learning outcomes. Skills/Abilities: - Demonstrated knowledge and implementation of best practices in information literacy instruction at the college/graduate level. - Professional and pedagogical commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. - Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in collection development. - Strong organizational and project management skills and attention to detail. - Understanding of and experience with assessment principles and best practices. - Proficiency with online teaching technologies, content management systems, and library systems. - Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written and oral form. - Ability to exercise initiative, make independent decisions, and interpret policies. - Demonstrated success working cooperatively, respectfully, and effectively with faculty and students in a culturally diverse community. - Ability to demonstrate patience and compassion for students at multiple levels of technical and research competencies. - Ability to work successfully both as an active, collaborative team member and independently. - Commitment to making professional contributions to the field of library science and awareness of current research in the field.
